The Program Manager, California Board & Leadership Council, manages a complex workload to prepare for and run 3 annual Board meetings, 1-2 Council meetings, a suite of working groups, and field trips to engage a diverse set of volunteer leaders.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Working closely with California’s executive office, fundraising, marketing, external affairs, conservation and science staff, the Program Manager will create engaging experiences for The Nature Conservancy of California’s Board of Trustees and Leadership Council. These volunteer leaders are some of the Conservancy’s most loyal and generous supporters, advisors and ambassadors. This position provides day-to-day support for the Board of Trustees and drives the engagement strategy of the Leadership Council, working closely with its Co-Chairs and Executive Director to maximize participation. The Program Manager will help develop Board and Council meeting agendas, set timelines for content and presentation development, schedule presentation rehearsals and review, communicate staff responsibilities, and ensure appropriate and timely follow up to all meetings. This position will manage timely production and distribution of deliverables such as invitations, registration materials, Board book materials and other briefings and presentation templates that relate to Council and Board meetings, working groups and events. The Program Manager will attend Council and Board meetings as needed and manage all administrative functions related to the Board and Council. This position will coordinate and assign the taking and distribution of minutes, maintain documents and processes, and ensure that contact with Council and Board members is documented and recorded. The Program Manager will work directly with conservation teams across land, water and oceans as well as leaders in technology and economics who are solving some of the most critical conservation challenges we face today, all while partnering closely with the Conservancy’s sophisticated development team to recruit and steward these key supporters.

The Program Manager reports to the Chief of Staff and is a key member of the Executive Office, located in the heart of San Francisco’s financial district.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Coordinate projects with several variables, set realistic deadlines, and manage a timeline.
  • Decisions may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget, and negotiating and contracting with vendors. 
  • Implement and manage new initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved.
  • Manage functional activity towards program’s strategic goals.
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
  • May supervise administrative, professional and/or volunteer staff, responsibility includes training and professional development.
  • Travel occasionally, work long and flexible hours as needed. Board and Council meetings and field trips span the state of California.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience coordinating projects.
  • Experience generating reports, and analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Experience with current technology in relevant field.
  • Experience working across departments.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of relevant field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to implement complex processes.
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results. 
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff.
  • Experience interpreting guidelines to achieve desired results.
  • Experience supervising staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the specific field.
  • Strong organization and negotiating skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Successful experience implementing strategic program goals.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles.
