REPORTING TO:  Deputy Executive Director, Campaigns & Membership, Amnesty International USA, and Director, Technology and Human Rights at the International Secretariat.

  • Raise awareness of Amnesty International’s human right work by representing the organization externally and promoting our work in Silicon Valley, including strengthening our position as a thought leader in the technology and human rights space;
  • Identify technology solutions that could help Amnesty International address human rights abuses, protect human rights defenders and increase the impact of our campaigning and build relevant partnerships to develop these solutions;
  • Strengthen Amnesty International’s campaigning and engagement globally by identifying and maximizing opportunities to increase online mobilization;
  • Create and implement Amnesty’s technology innovation strategy, including launching a new Human Rights Innovation Council and Innovation Fund to support moon short innovation within the human rights sector.
Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Act as a senior representative and spokesperson for Amnesty International in the Silicon Valley tech community, promoting AI’s global human rights work and its strategic objectives;
  • Devise and implement a strategy for increasing the visibility of Amnesty’s human rights work in Silicon Valley, with the goal of positioning AI as a thought leader in the technology and human rights space;
  • Develop Amnesty’s relationships with tech sector allies, engineers and workers and seek opportunities for partnership considering Amnesty’s mission, values and campaigns;
  • Create and implement Amnesty’s technology innovation strategy, including launching a new Human Rights Innovation Council and Innovation Fund to support moon shot innovation within the human rights sector.
  • Provide strategic and operational support to relevant Amnesty International campaigns; Develop and implement a growth strategy to engage the Silicon Valley tech community, workers and engineers, in advancing Amnesty’s Strategic Goals, such as increasing overall human rights activism with the tech sector, as well as increasing AI’s access to technical support for innovation.
  • Form and manage in coordination with relevant AIUSA staff the Human Rights Innovation Council, which will be made up of high-level influencers who support AI’s work in variety of ways;
  • Provide overall leadership of the work of the Silicon Valley Initiative, ensuring that the work of the initiative advances the goals of Amnesty International.

MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE:

  • Recruit and manage additional staff for the Initiative as appropriate and ensure performance is managed and talent is nurtured;
  • Manage staff and other resources to ensure their most effective use, in line with agreed priorities and policies;
  • Manage risk assessments and oversees the implementation of security procedures for staff;
  • Promote an organizational culture of integration across programs and manage the effective integration of the Initiative’s staff within the broader organization;
  • Set, monitor, manage and report on budget and expenditure for the work undertaken by the Initiative.

This is not an exhaustive list of duties. The need for flexibility is required and the post holder is expected to carry out any other related duties that are within the employee’s skills and capabilities whenever reasonably instructed.

Skills/Experience: 
  • Proven and successful experience of working in a key leadership role in a complex organization with an international remit;
  • Extensive knowledge of the technology sector and strong relationships with a broad range of actors within the sector in Silicon Valley;
  • Experience working on human rights or social justice issues is desirable;
  • Proven experience of external representation, including strong public speaking skills and experience conducting media interviews;
  • Demonstrated senior experience in developing large scale funding proposals with a demonstrable record of success;
  • Five+ years of experience of leading staff and managing people and other resources to achieve agreed objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to inspire and motivate staff and partners;
  • Demonstrable ability to initiate, develop and sustain positive working relationships over long periods of time with a wide range of individuals and groups, including those from different cultural backgrounds to the job holder’s own and at a distance.
  • Ability to travel on average 25+% of the time.
