The Associate Director of Communications develops, implements and manages media strategies that build brand awareness and engagement with the Nature Conservancy through consistent top-tier media placement.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Associate Director of Communications develops implements and manages effective media strategies to drive organizational strategy. S/he facilitates on-going communication between all parts of the California chapter and globally dispersed marketing division, internal and external stakeholders and identifies communication and media needs and opportunities. S/he develops and fosters relations with key stakeholders and media contacts and secures placement in elite-level publications. Provides consultation, media training, coaching and talking points to persons serving as spokesperson(s).

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Develops, directs and implements California chapter’s media strategy
  • Manage assigned budget and public relations firm; evaluates results and iterates strategy to achieve goals
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting strategic goals and objectives.
  • Build relationships with CA and national reporters at key outlets leading to increased coverage of The Nature Conservancy.
  • Build relationships with conservation staff to develop and shape stories ensuring a steady flow of relevant, timely stories are pitched and secured in targeted media outlets.
  • Manage media training structure where staff get trained and are able to speak effectively to the media for feature stories, expert opinion and rapid response.
  • Distribute media hits to internal audiences and external audiences as needed to support digital marketing efforts.
  • Support thought leadership events – write abstracts, identify and prep speakers.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience developing communications and media strategies and measuring results.
  • Experience managing and implementing multiple projects.
  • Experience in program management and measuring results of strategic plans.
  • Experience cultivating and managing reporter and stakeholder relationships resulting in national media level stories.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading messages for targeted audiences.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience developing, implementing and measuring communication and media plans/strategies.  
  • Demonstrated ability in managing budgets, vendors and staff
  • Excellent writing, presentation, communication, mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.  Experience and/or understanding of communication best practices at a decentralized organization a plus.
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline
  • Management experience that includes ability to lead, motivate, set objectives and manage performance and conflict resolution.
  • Experience working at a senior management level.  
  • Experience with social media and packaging digital stories to support media placement.
