The Aquatics Safety Director is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training/certification, and scheduling of lifeguards at the Stonestown branch, as well as maintaining the safety of the aquatic environment. This position collaborates effectively with the Associate Aquatics Director, Aquatics Coordinator and other Aquatics staff at the branch to ensure safe pool operations. This position will directly supervise the Aquatics Coordinator in collaboration with the Associate Aquatics Director. Through strong communication and outreach skills, this position will build relationships with local schools and community organizations to effectively recruit lifeguard candidates and develop ongoing lifeguard training programs.
- Recruit, train, evaluate and supervise lifeguard staff. Direct supervision and coaching of Aquatics Coordinator and Lifeguards and collaborates with other Aquatics Lead Staff including Associate Director. Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with community partners to recruit lifeguard candidates. Onboard new lifeguards consistently to maintain proper lifeguard ratios at both facilities and each branch is staffed at 110%. Ensures staff certifications and trainings are up to date. Personally fills in gaps in Lifeguard schedule when not staffed.
- Coaches and develops staff. Provides opportunities for ongoing training and mentoring of lifeguards. Develops strong sense of team and provides staff recognition and support. Plans and conducts monthly in-service trainings for lifeguards. Holds weekly supervision meetings with Aquatics Coordinator. Works with Aquatics Coordinator to develop and review all lifeguard staff.
- Builds respectful and meaningful relationships with other staff, members, program participants, donors and volunteers.
- Host and teach monthly lifeguard certification classes. Ensures high quality certification classes are delivered with appropriate curriculum, at minimum monthly or as needed. Maintains a tracking system for participation, attendance.
- Develop programming. Create lifeguard camps at each branch to intentionally recruit student and young adult lifeguards during school breaks.
- Maintains lifeguard staff schedules. Responsible for effective lifeguard staffing to ensure branch facilities are open during operating hours. Collaborates with other Aquatics Leads to provide consistent staffing in Aquatics programming.
- Maintains national and SF Association safety and program standards in aquatics in collaboration with branch Aquatics staff. Eliminates gaps between practice and policy.
- Audits building safety and addresses any facility issues with the Facilities Department and is a member of the branch’s Safety Committee. Runs regular safety audits.
- Identify/remove barriers to inclusion. Ensures environments are welcoming and accessible.
- Effectively collaborates and communicates with other departments as needed.
- Adheres to budget expectations. Excellent fiscal stewardship.
- Support Annual Campaign and fundraising. Builds relationships with members to recruit as volunteers fundraisers. Tells Y story to garner philanthropic donations towards branch fundraising goal.
- Establishes strong communication systems with all YMCA staff and facilities.

- Works with branch leadership to exceed standards in all facets of operations including safety audits, financial goals, and staff satisfaction measurements.
- Serve as active member of Branch Leadership Team. This includes participation in branch events, including but not limited to, Halloween Spooktakular, Campaign events, Veteran’s breakfast and Healthy Kids Day. This position will have a lead role in Stonestown’s Safety Around Water (SAW) program.

- Minimum of 21 years old
- Available to work weekends, mornings, and evenings as needed
- Two years of experience managing Aquatics programming, including fiscal responsibility.
- Minimum 2 years of experience supervising staff
- Basic computer skills required, including: Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
- YUSA Lifeguard Instructor Certified*
- YMCA approved CPR/AED/First Aid Certification*
- Current YMCA Lifeguard certification*
- Must attend all YMCA of SF required trainings within 30 days
- Works toward completing the Team Leader competency level with the Y-USA associated leadership trainings within the first two years of hire.
*Certification expected within first 30 days of hiring if crossing-over from another certifying body
Salary: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00
