The Writer & Editor is part of the Donor Communications Team for the California Chapter and writes a variety of digital and print communications for our major donor audience. The Writer interviews conservation staff and scientists to find compelling stories about our work to share with our donors. The Writer produces the Executive Director’s newsletters, updates and VIP donor proposals, and puts together creative materials to support fundraisers working with individual donors, corporations and foundations. 

The Writer & Editor is responsible for writing and editing donor communications materials for the California Chapter including monthly newsletters, bi-annual Executive Director updates, proposals, reports, fact sheets, and other materials highlighting our conservation work. The Writer must be able to 1) make a strong case for our conservation strategies and projects, 2) demonstrate a deep understanding of key audiences, and 3) synthesize complex information into language that resonates with donors and other stakeholders. The Writer will work in close cooperation with the following: Philanthropy, Marketing, Conservation, Science, External Affairs, Finance staff; major and principal gift donors; and contractors. S/he must also be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, be responsive to deadlines and tight timetables, and work well under pressure.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages and implements projects by setting timelines, assigning roles, coordinating with designers, meeting deadlines and achieving project objectives. 
  • Serves as team lead on assigned print, web, and email communications.
  • Accomplishes goals by gaining cooperation from individuals or groups over whom there is no direct authority.
  • Proactive problem-solver who resolves issues independently within program area.
  • Delivers consistently excellent work product and works independently without requiring heavy oversight. 
  • Can travel occasionally, and work long and flexible hours as needed.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience or equivalent combination. 
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience writing and editing newsletters, executive communications, nonfiction articles for print and/or web, proposals, reports, profiles, fact sheets or similar materials.
  • Experience writing for diverse audiences including executive team, donors, board members, media, policy makers, and the public or similar.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience working across multiple departments.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies.  
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills. 
  • Reporting and journalism experience.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
  • Familiarity with design software, like InDesign, and content management systems, like Wordpress or Craft CMS.
  • Experience leading or managing projects.
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate internal and external constituents.
