Teach For America San Diego seeks a Manager, Alumni Network to ensure that we are building and supporting a broad and diverse coalition of leaders that is united by a belief in all kids, and a commitment to equity and excellence in education. In order to maximize the leadership of our full alumni base, we must provide spaces and experiences where they come together to feel connected, valued, and called to act. Our alumni are positioned to be critical agents of change; their likelihood to stay in San Diego and continue to impact change hinges on the extent to which we tap into their unique leadership potential.

The ideal candidate will support the efforts of our alumni council as well as create spaces for alumni to connect, learn from one another, and self-organize around shared goals. You will create space for learning opportunities for alumni that choose to stay a third year inside or outside the classroom. You will also work alongside the San Diego Teacher Leadership Development (TLD) team to support the 2nd year corps member transition to alumni work and set and execute strategies for ensuring alumni are engaged, feel connected to, and are invested in our work within the organization and across the broader community. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Visionary Leader (15%)

  • Develop a bold 2-3 year vision, strategy, and metrics that support activating and amplifying a broad and diverse coalition of leaders in San Diego.
  • Work closely with other members of the regional team to develop plans for network-wide and targeted engagements that build community and spark action.
  • Research and learn from other organizations and their approaches and strategies for catalyzing and empowering individual leadership.
  • Work in partnership with the National Collective Leadership & Engagement Team to align regional and national vision and strategy. 

Strategic Decision Maker (20%)

  • Develop learning opportunities with community partners and allies for alumni to engage in with a focus on strengthening leadership that results in impact.
  • Create and manage a strategy for corps and alumni community building and celebration.
  • Strategically align alumni opportunities with existing programming (Leadership Advance, Acceleration Academies, Induction). 
  • Create and implement a strategy for incoming alumni new to the state.

Developer of Individual and Collective Leadership (20%)

  • Manage the effectiveness of the TFA San Diego Alumni Council by working closely with the elected Chair and Co-Chair and creating measurements that help push the Council’s results further.
  • Work with the Alumni Council to develop ambitious and achievable goals that drive alumni engagement in San Diego beyond regional staff programming. 
  • Develop of the San Diego program continuum in partnership with the Teacher Leadership Development (TLD) team and identify key opportunities for second-year corps members transition into alumnihood. 
  • Cultivate relationships with second-year corps members that provide them with the resources, opportunities and a network to encourage their commitment to San Diego.
  • Manage a relationship portfolio of up to 400 alumni and corps member and identify new potential strategies to connect, support, and engage alumni as individuals and groups

Community Builder and Connector (20%)

  • Connect individually with approximately 15-20 alumni per month in order to build strong relationships and identify opportunities (resources, individuals, programs, etc.) to deepen or expand their leadership
  • Implement a strategy for alumni new to San Diego that connects them to our local network and positions them to be impactful leaders. 
  • Manage Alumni Induction, which celebrates our 2nd-year corps members transitioning into alumni hood and our collective leadership.
  • Plan and execute alumni events (networking hours, etc.) and coordinate alumni engagement in regional events and activities (i.e. teacher induction, school visits, etc.) in partnership with the Alumni Council.
  • Manage the annual Alumni Giving Campaign.
  • Create, support and drive the management and completion of an annual alumni survey.

Brand Builder (10%)

  • Manage external communications to alumni in San Diego.
  • Collaborate with regional teams and national communications team to develop and execute an increasingly effective alumni communications strategy to help alumni feel part of a movement, to connect and to lead and support each other in the movement working to ensure that one day all children have access to an excellent education
  • Support the development of alumni facing content for regional social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Create and publish relevant content in alignment with alumni communications strategy in alumni newsletters and website 
  • Compile data and supplementary materials (alumni program information) for alumni and corps member audiences, working across teams to ensure consistent brand
  • Support regional marketing with the creation of marketing materials that enhance development efforts.
  • Update alumni records via internal TFACT system to ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Manage regional social media accounts to create an online presence and align with national branding standards.
  • Support the Managing Director, Development and Partnerships in communicating to donors and external partners.

Regional Team Responsibilities (15%) 

  • Participate in regional and team activities, including induction, corps member selection, and matriculation, staff meetings, functional team meetings and retreats. 
  • Attend all staff meetings, professional development conferences, and experiences. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required 
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2-3+ years of professional experience, event management experience, preferred 
  • Record of achieving ambitious goals and creating effective systems to manage multiple projects 
  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to think critically with a high level of organization and attention to detail 
  • Ability to work efficiently with a high degree of accuracy in a deadline-driven environment 
  • Excellent project management skills, especially related to communications and events 
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate the needs of others and identify opportunities for improving systems and processes 
  • Superior customer service orientation and follow-through 
  • Ability to be entrepreneurial and flexible in a fast-paced, diverse, results-oriented culture 
  • Knowledge of MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel is required 
  • Strong facility with Excel and PowerPoint and/or other graphics tools preferred 
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks 

Work Demands

  • Ability to travel frequently within the region, to meet with key stakeholders
  • Occasional overnight travel required for attendance at various conferences and events 
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required
