Wounded Warrior Project’s (WWP) Benefits Training Specialist advocates for WWP’s constituency through direct disability claims representation before the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) and the Department of Defense (DOD). The Benefits Training Specialist leads, creates, and provides oversight of the training programs for the Benefits Service Team to meet the standards of the Department of Veteran Affairs for establishing and maintaining accreditation. The Training Specialist creates and implements short and long-term training initiatives to ensure WWP is meeting the needs of our constituency and leading innovation in the VA/Veteran Service Organization (VSO) community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Utilize technical expertise to support teammates in representing the most complex and extraordinary claims before the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) and Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Lead and manage the implementation of mandatory developmental and technical training programs.
  • Oversee the consistency and quality of WWP benefit training programs.
  • Utilizing WWP and VA data systems to identify trends and implement training programs for the WWP Benefits Team.
  • Maintain the inventory of WWP training assets and advise how the assets can be effectively utilized and updated to achieve training objectives.
  • Utilize technical expertise to assist in WWP advocacy initiatives, influencing decisions for the benefit of the warrior and family support population.
  • Knowledge of and skill in applying learning theories, principles, and methods.
  • Utilize a wide variety of learning methods including technology-based methodologies such as distance learning and computer-based instruction.
  • Train and mentor benefits teammates based upon their individual learning needs. Prepare and implement individual training plans for benefits staff.
  • Remain current on all VA and DoD laws, regulations, and benefits.
  • Maintain and update all WWP electronic tracking systems to include, but not limited to, Salesforce.
  • Maintain Veterans Service Organization accreditation standards set forth by the VA Office of General Counsel (OGC).
  • Develop and organize training manuals, multimedia visual aids, and other educational materials.
  • Plan and implement training initiatives to include, but not limited to, classroom training, mentoring, demonstrations, on-the-job training, meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Analyze training needs to develop new training programs or modify and improve existing programs.
  • Maintain testing and evaluation procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Equivalent combination of education, experience, training, and certification may be considered in lieu of degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Extensive knowledge and experience involving all Department of Defense (DOD) programs, VA laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to be accredited by Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Self-motivated, positive, outgoing, personable, and able to relate well with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill applying, learning theories, principles, and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated organization skills. Diligent.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and prioritize.
  • High degree of competency with adult learning concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated versatility and strength in both written and verbal communications.
  • Demonstrated professional and political acumen, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Ability to take initiative and manage simultaneous deliverables under pressure.
  • Highly positive, collaborative, and solutions-focused temperament.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and seek clarification when necessary.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical abilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, e.g., PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Publisher.
  • Technology-adept with the ability to learn new software and systems as needed.
  • Unequivocal commitment to the highest standards of personal and business ethics and conduct.
  • Mission-driven, guided by core values, and a pleasure to work with.
  • Six years of experience as a veteran’s benefits advocate.
  • Three years of experience in developing and maintaining relevant training program curricula.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Accreditation by Department of Veterans Affairs.
