Context: Provides leadership for the Sierra Club in Utah.  Acts as the face of the Club in speaking to donors, media and other agencies. Actively engages existing members, lobbies legislators, interacts with land managers and raises funds to maintain and expand club operations.

Implements policies and programs adopted by the Utah Chapter Executive Committee (ExCom). 

Scope: The Chapter Director carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the ExCom for the assigned areas of Chapter programs and operations.  The Manager is responsible for; the day-to-day operations of the Chapter office; developing and implementing fundraising plans; leading Chapter lobbying and political efforts; supporting assigned conservation campaigns.  Responsible for managing staff and financial resources.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • ExCom support.  Assists the ExCom, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
  • Fundraising.  Maintains accurate lists of donors, contact information, relevant background information and giving history.  Manages the Chapter’s annual fundraising campaigns.  Identifies and cultivates major donors and participates in funding requests.  Identifies, cultivates and solicits potential business partners.  Responsible for submitting grant proposals to Foundations and businesses for ExCom approved projects.  Leads the effort to thank and recognize donors.
  • Public Relations. Plans and implements an effective public relations program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility and position on issues, for priority program areas.  Acts as general spokesperson for the chapter.
  • Meeting Arrangements.  Provides support to the ExCom Chair, including helping to organize and document bi-monthly ExCom meetings.  Coordinates closely with all Committee Chairs on meeting arrangements, reporting on decisions and following up on agreed actions.
  • Office Administration.  Oversees the administrative operation of the Chapter office and acts as an information center for the Chapter.  Assure compliance with Sierra Club Bylaws and legal requirements.
  • Financial.  Works with the Treasurer to track financial performance; helps prepare yearly budget for ExCom approval.  Provides timely classification of revenue and expenses.  Follows Chapter financial procedures and comply with national Sierra Club requirements.  Coordinates promptly with national Sierra Club on financial matters. 
  • Communications.  Leads Chapter communications efforts by providing action alerts to members of significant events. Updates the chapter website as needed. Overseas chapter social media program.  Produces quarterly electronic and semi-annual print newsletters and Annual Report.  Serves as a spokesperson with the media.
  • Legislative Programs.  With the Political Committee, designs and implements effective legislative programs and initiatives that reflect the Chapter goals and priorities.  Lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials, boards and commissions. 
  • Outreach.  Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events.  Builds strong relationships with other groups aligned with Chapter priorities, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc.  Leads the Chapter Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program.
  • Conservation.  When assigned by the ExCom, assists in the planning, implementation, and management of the core conservation efforts and programs.  
  • Manages staff in assigned areas.  Oversees the Chapter Organizer. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate.  Ensures Chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices. 
  • Miscellaneous.  Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned and agreed.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or relevant field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least three years’ experience in the grassroots organizing, organizing campaigns, press relations, public speaking, coalition building and lobbying.
  • Track record in fundraising and building relationships with major donors.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues in Utah.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking ability.  Proficient computer skills. Strong organizational skill set.
  • Prior lobbying experience and knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Ability to travel as necessary to perform job responsibilities.
  • Experience with Sierra Club preferred.
