The CA LULAC Director of Strategic Development and Operations (DSDO) oversees programs, operations, and finance. The DSDO is a leader well-versed in all operational domains of nonprofit organizations who can help others at LULAC deliver on the mission. Importantly, the successful DSDO will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into and amplify the power that each member of the team brings to the organization. While it is essential that the DSDO bring efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, it is also critical that DSDO efforts retain and enhance the creative spark that is at the heart of LULAC’s team.
The DSDO reports to the CA LULAC State Director. The position requires a focus on executing the vision of the State Director and the CA LULAC Executive Board. It requires working in close partnership with both to carry out the strategic vision and goals of the organization. This is a full-time, exempt position located in Salinas, CA.
The Director of Strategic Development and Operations (DSDO) is responsible for the overall daily administrative operations of the organization. Performs related duties as assigned by the State Director with inputs from the Chair of the CA LULAC Foundation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Overall Organization Management & Leadership
- Responsible for providing the Director and the Executive Board with an annual plan of action for implementing the strategic three-year plan for the organization and is accountable for planning, scheduling, implementing, executing, and ensuring the strategic plan goals, objectives, and responsibilities are met and in line with the mission of the organization. (Current Strategic Plan)
- Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CA LULAC Director and Leadership Team to ensure that CA LULAC has the systems and procedures in place to support effective strategic plan implementation.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the organization including assisting the board and planning committee with the planning, scheduling and execution of the California LULAC Convention. The DSDO provides ongoing administrative support to ensure a successful annual state convention including creating promotional materials and securing sponsorships for the convention. After the convention, together with the State Director and committee will create an After-Action Evaluation Report and assist in post-convention tasks, such as thanking sponsors and speakers.
- Provide critical information, decision-making input, and actionable recommendations on strategic and programmatic operations.
- Develops, establishes, maintains, and posts a CA LULAC master calendar of council, district and State events.
- Responsible for assisting the State Director in hiring, selecting, managing, and training paid staff and volunteers/interns and assisting with filling vacant committee-appointed positions.
- Organize and facilitate Leadership Team meetings, ensuring that the team understands priorities and can meaningfully shape the organization's direction.
- Makes recommendations to the State Director for creating a progressive environment and works to inspire a positive culture at all levels of the organization.
- Other duties as assigned, provides assistance to CA LULAC Foundation as needed
Alignment with Mission and Values
- Collaborates with the State Director when communicating and representing the organization both internally and externally when setting up meetings with state, county, media, private, and community organizations for advancing CA LULAC’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Provide the State Director and Executive Board members with written quarterly summary status reports of projects, activities, actions and accomplishments.
- Provide the CA LULAC State Director with a comprehensive annual report (December) reflecting activities and accomplishments and setting the goals and objectives for the following year.
Financial Management and Business Operations
- Assists the Director in providing marketing, and branding efforts of the organization.
- Prepare semi and annual sponsor reports to the State Director and Foundation Chair.
- Ensure all approved grants are accounted for and spent according to restrictions and guidelines.
Fundraising and Development
- The position will assist Leadership with fundraising and sponsorship development. Along with the Leadership Team, actively engages with a diverse range of stakeholders, including sponsors, donors, foundations, government agencies, community leaders, and dedicated supporters.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 3+ years of experience or equivalent experience preferred.

- General Management—Thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing.
- Must be punctual and dependable.
- Must have excellent communication and writing skills and effectively work together in teams.
- Intermediate computer skills with Excel, Adobe, and PowerPoint proficiency preferred.
- Intermediate proficiency with PC systems
- Ability to work independently without close supervision and to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must use tact and courtesy in dealing with staff, clients, volunteers, and visitors.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, employees, outside contacts, and members of the Board.
- Must be level-headed in emergency situations and have an acute sense of responsibility.
- Must attend all mandatory meetings and specified training sessions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality around sensitive and complex relationships and projects.
- Must have funding-raising experience.
- Must be able to meet the strategic goals and objectives of the organization.
Base Salary Range $55,000 - $70,000 (depending on the level of experience)
