This position is responsible for every aspect of the day-to-day operations of Youth First of Washington County, a program of the Washington County Family YMCA. Director will work closely with Washington County Family YMCA CEO, youth development team and staff of the Washington County Family YMCA. The Youth First director must possess passion and believe in the potential of youth. The Director must be a self-motivator, have the ability to build relationships, understand community needs and possess an aptitude for developing creative approaches to challenges related to youth development.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Internal Leadership

The Director works closely with YMCA CEO and Youth Development team to ensure that the goals and objectives of the Youth First are achieved.

  • Provide leadership, motivation and guidance to youth development team.
  • Supervise and Schedule staff for camps, afterschool, and kids club.
  • Address personnel needs, issues as they arise and document for employee file.
  • Supervise a team of 5-10 staff members for implementation of youth development programs.
  • Work with YMCA Insurance partner to provide training for staff regarding but not to limited to safe environments, emergency preparedness, child abuse prevention, etc.

External Leadership

The Director serves as the ultimate resource on youth development and the 40 Developmental Assets for the community.

  • This position is the advocate for the needs of youth in our community.
  • Keeps abreast of community needs and interests as they relate to implementation of the 40 Developmental Assets and care values of YMCA.
  • Serves as a liaison to other non-profit organizations in Washington County serving needs of youth and families.
  • Organizes educational programs for professional and civic groups related to youth topics.
  • As the budget permits, participates in YMCA, Indiana Youth Institute and Search Institute regional, national, and affinity group functions, as well as other conferences and workshops related to Youth Development work and professional development.
  • Represents and serves as spokesperson for Youth First and youth development initiative of the YMCA to the general public and other organizations or entities.
  • Makes presentations to appropriate groups on 40 Developmental Assets and initiatives of Youth First and the YMCA to serve needs of community’s youth and families.
  • Maintains a working relationship with others in the field, including the local youth and family serving professionals.
  • Coordinate and facilitate quarterly Youth First Café- educational luncheons whose audience is youth workers in our community. Done in collaboration with IYI.
  • Organize Youth & Family Resource Contacts for distribution in the community

Communication

The Director will serve as a link for the community to youth development.

  • Work closely with YMCA staff to incorporate asset message into programs related to youth and families.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to speak for YMCA youth development before groups and on occasions that will further the goals of the organization.
  • Works to increase awareness of the Youth First and YMCA collaboration and to build relationships with donors, and prospective donors.
  • Demonstrates a passion for youth development and models asset development values and behaviors.
  • Identify and seek out collaborative opportunities in the youth development field.
  • Serve as a convener of stakeholders and professionals serving the needs of youth and families.
  • Responsible for all marketing, press releases, newsletters and other print materials for all youth development programs.
  • Comfortable utilizing social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.) to promote youth development programs and message of YMCA.
  • Provide marketing and communication for all YMCA program- Specifically Paper flyers, Washington County Family YMCA website, Quarterly Program Flyers, Press Releases, YMCA social media platforms, etc.

Budgeting & Grant Writing

The Director will oversee fundraising to sustain and grow youth and 40 asset development efforts:

  • Responsible for monitoring and administering funds of Youth First in a manner that is reflective of donor’s intentions.
  • Oversee and implement annual budget of approximately $80,000.
  • Identify and pursue diversified funding streams.
  • Responsible for writing and submitting grant proposals.
  • Collect data and required documentation for grant reporting.
  • Prepares the annual operating budget and capital needs of youth development for recommendation to the YMCA CEO, and, after approval, administers operating funds within the approved budget.
  • Specifically: Washington County Community Foundation, Substance Abuse Council, etc.

Programs

The Director will oversee all aspects of YMCA and Youth First program implementation.

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise and implement programs for youth, parents and families.
  • Work in collaboration with other youth and family serving organizations to grow participation in programs.
  • Operate programs in accordance with grant requirements.
  • Operate programs within budget guidelines as approved by supervisor and identify/pursue additional funding sources.
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate program staff and volunteers.
  • Conduct annual program evaluations.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of all program activities including program cost analysis, program participation, outcomes, statistics and schedules of activities.
  • Facilitates the development of plans and programs to achieve the goals of Youth First.
  • Assures the maintenance of adequate records.
  • Specifically: Break Day Camps, Summer Camp, Afterschool, Rocks, Jr. Rocks, etc.
  • Attends to any other responsibilities that arise in keeping with the mission, by-laws, and articles of incorporation of the Washington County Family YMCA and the goals of Youth First as given to the Director by the YMCA CEO.

The effectiveness of the candidate’s fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  • The degree to which there is steady growth in the size, scope and effectiveness of programs.
  • The degree to which awareness of youth development initiative is sustained and grown in the community.
  • The purposeful enlistment of volunteers in effective service as program supporters.
  • The degree to which the Youth First mission, including the 40 Developmental Assets and core values of YMCA, is evident in all programs and activities.
  • The degree to which successful grant writing and fundraising is executed to sustain the mission of the organization.
Skills/Experience: 

To perform satisfactorily, the candidate should bring the following skills and/or experience to this position:

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Youth Services, Social Services, Education, Marketing/Public Relations or related field.
  • Previous experience in youth development preferred.
  • Ability to write clearly with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to speak, write and dress in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to plan work and maximize resources.
  • Ability to effectively interact with others. Position requires the Candidate to meet, greet and discuss with others multiple concepts. Must be able to communicate effectively in these situations.
  • Ability to research and analyze data and information.
  • Proficient with basic office machinery, all Microsoft Office computer programs, internet and social media.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle.
  • Ability to develop and give presentations.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and presentations.
  • Ability to travel and attend off site events, such as community meetings and special events.
  • Knowledge, experience and proven success in the following areas: Program management, Program development, Community collaborations
  • Knowledge of general YMCA & Youth First philosophies, objectives and programs.
  • Ability to organize and manage programs for youth, parents and families.
  • Ability to write and sustain grant funding.
  • Submit to criminal background check and CPS check.
Compensation/Benefits: 

$33,000.00 - $38,000.00
