The Senior Spatial Data Scientist leads and collaborates with scientists and program leaders from Land, Groundwater, Oceans, Agriculture and Dynamic Water teams to design and execute landscape level studies using GIS, advanced satellite remote sensing technology open source modeling framework to advance science and policies that will enable sustainable use of water and land to mitigate climate change impacts, anthropogenic disturbances, and strategically restore disturbed and degraded habitat, forest and landscapes. The Senior Spatial Data Scientist is responsible for: providing technical leadership and advice to Conservation Technology and different teams in undertaking rigorous studies using data science, study design, sampling framework, statistical models and complex spatial-analysis to achieve complex conservation initiatives; advancing the application of remote sensing methods in monitoring and supporting conservation strategies within ocean, water and land; leading the advancement and application of innovative methods to leadership in Science and Programs by undertaking scientific experiments for developing satellite remote sensing-based methods and tools to support program strategies using machine learning approaches, open source platforms and automated scripts, statistical packages and various modeling platforms; and independently evaluating, selecting, and applying cutting edge open source data mining methods and techniques (e.g., machine learning, drones, image processing) around the collection, management, analysis, and visualization of spatial data related to natural resources and human demographics.
- Position requires a PhD in Applied Remote Sensing, and 5 years of work or research experience with geospatial or remote sensing software and mapping systems, and developing remote sensing methods and tools to monitor forest loss, landscape change within natural and urban systems.
- Position also requires experience with: geospatial software applications, including 5 years’ experience with ESRI, QGIS, ARCGIS and 3 years’ experience with ArcView, and Geospatial API; Remote Sensing Software and Platforms, including 5 years’ experience with ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, and Google Earth Engine, 3 years’ experience with Fushion, and eCognition, and 2 years’ experience with IDRISI; Relational database management systems, including 5 years’ experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Work and 1 year experience with Microsoft Access; Scripting, including 5 years’ experience with Python, R, and Javascript; Statistical software packages, including 5 years’ experience with SAS and SPSS and 2 years’ experience with MATLAB; and Satellite Imagery, including 5 years’ experience with Landsat, ASTER, QuickBird, Sentinel 1 and 2, MODIS, AWIFS, LISS I and III, SPOT, and World View 2, 4 years’ experience with NAIP, and 3 years’ experience with Lidar.
- Position also requires 5 years’ experience with each of the following: Study Design, Algorithm Development, Statistical Analysis and Modeling, Landscape Change Detection, Monitoring and Mapping Natural Resources, Analysis and Synthesis, and writing Reports/Manuscripts/White Papers.
