The Remote Communication Specialist (RCS) designs and implements low voltage power systems, hardware, networks, networking physical layers & protocols, and sensors, in remote environments. Researches and resolves complex problems in support of local field initiatives. This position will specifically work to solve the complex problems associated with conducting conservation work in remote locations.
The Remote Communication Specialist (RCS) designs and implements low voltage power systems, hardware, networks, networking physical layers & protocols, and sensors, in remote environments on preserves. They provide IT operations functions for the organization’s standard hardware, software and voice/data network solutions, and for hardware and software tailored to site-specific applications. They are responsible for the purchase, installation, and life-cycle maintenance of PCs, sensors and network connectivity equipment. As appropriate, they provide escalated on-site support of hardware, software and network connectivity issues. Acts as the primary point of communication between IT, conservation staff and external vendors. Performs local administration and operations functions as appropriate in accordance with TNC and IT standards, policies and procedures. This position will primarily work on TNC’s Palmyra Atoll Preserve in the Northern Line Islands. The Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve, and on Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- In cooperation with IT and conservation staff, provides strategic, budgeting and disaster recovery/business continuity planning to offices and staff in multiple locations.
- Responsible for designing, building, installing, and maintaining remote data communication networks at Palmyra
- Atoll and on TNC properties in California
- Designs and implements low voltage power systems, hardware, networks, networking physical layers & protocols, and sensors, in remote environments.
- Prototype, document, debug, budget, and revise hardware & software.
- Responsible for hardware inventory, software license management, and security compliance in accordance with TNC and IT standards, policies and procedures.
- Responsible for maintenance of systems documentation such as IT operations manuals.
- Serves as the technical and communications liaison to and from stakeholders and office key users for IT communications, initiatives, needs assessments, etc.
- Responsible for procurement process, installation and life-cycle maintenance of IT hardware on TNC projects
- Provides consulting/training/education for IT and Conservation staff in support of local projects
- Serve as the point of contact and accountable for the IT portion network configuration.
- Responsible for local IT vendor, contract and outsourcing management.
- Perform appropriate duties associated with division and IT project-based activities.
- Provide backup for other IT Technicians in the service area.
- Participate in the identification, development and communication of new technology standards and best practices.
- Responsible for monitoring data backups in offices to ensure that they are completed on a regular basis
- 2 years’ experience in operations or equivalent combined.
- Experience with MS Office software, Windows and Macintosh environment.
- Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data.
- Ability to travel to and between remote locations (Palmyra, Santa Cruz Island, and potentially other locations)
- Experience installing remote wireless networks, sensors and remote communication devices.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience with TNC standard software applications.
- Training ability and/or experience is a plus.
- Database management skills with the ability to produce reports.
- Experience managing projects and budgets
