Context: Collaborates with chapter volunteer leaders and staff and regional office staff to promote the conservation action, public education, and other goals of the Sierra Club through the development, coordination, and implementation of messages and strategic media plans for the chapter and through social media outreach to the general public and to public officials.
Scope: The Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating media strategy for the full range of the chapter campaigns, public education projects, and other activities. The Communications Coordinator assists chapter volunteer leaders and Sierra Club California chapter staff in outreach to the general public and to public officials in the shaping and implementation of public policy.
- Develops, implements, and coordinates media strategy for the full range of chapter campaigns, public education projects and other activities.
- Assists in the development and preparation of chapter publications, fact sheets and other communication materials for campaigns and public education projects. Also helps develop fundraising letters and other fundraising materials.
- Pitches Sierra Club stories to the media. Writes and releases statements to the press. Coordinates responses to the media on all appropriate topics.
- Cultivates relations with editorial boards and seeks their support for Club initiatives and position. Develops and updates media lists.
- Maintains and updates website, FaceBook account and twitter account, among other social media..
- Manages and develops alerts with staff to engage volunteers in time-sensitive issues.
- Works closely with volunteer leaders and chapter office staff to coordinate all media events.
- Advises trains and assists chapter staff in their interactions with the news media.
- Organizes and maintains media clips for the chapter.
- Works with Spanish-language news media to expand coverage of chapter and other Sierra Club activities among the Spanish speaking population.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- Two to three years’ experience in communications or closely related field.
- Excellent public/media relations skills and ability to communicate well with writers, editors, and publishers.
- Excellent social media skills and experience.
- Strong oral, excellent editing and written communications skills.
- Proficiency in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, and fax applications.
- Demonstrated familiarity with conservation and environmental topics, issues, and literature.
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Fluency in Spanish.
