This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Human Resources Specialist is responsible for performing HR-related duties on a professional level and works closely with the Senior Director in supporting the association HR functions. The Specialist carries out responsibilities in the following areas: employee relations, recruitment & hiring, training, performance management, new employee onboarding, compensation, policy implementation and employment law compliance.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Administers various human resource plans and procedures for all organization personnel. Assists in the development and implementation of organizational personnel policies and procedures.
- Participates in developing the HR department goals, objectives and systems.
- Provides coaching and advises management staff to effectively resolve employee relations matters in the areas of performance improvement, disciplinary action and termination. Maintains confidentiality and promotes consistency and fairness while handling issues of policy enforcement.
- Helps conduct recruitment & hiring efforts for position vacancies including screening, interviewing & offer letters. Writes job postings locally and nationally in accordance with Y best practices.
- Coordinates the wage & salary administration program and department pay structures. Makes on-going recommendations for revision as necessary. Responsible for adherence to salary and pay structures and processes; secures proper documentation.
- Performs job classification, analysis and job description updates. Maintains job descriptions and profiles. Collaborates with payroll to ensure proper setup, classification and record of employment documents.
- Assists with performing benefits administration, including initiating benefit enrollment and changes. Communicates benefits information to employees.
- Performs HR related processes including drug screenings and background checks, extended leave requests, satisfaction surveys and confidential investigations.
- Maintains HRIS records and compiles reports, information or verifications from the database as needed.
- Participates in staff and committee meetings and attends association meetings, events and trainings.
- Maintains understanding of company personnel, organization charts and the employee directory
- Maintains compliance with federal, state and local employment and benefits laws and regulations. Helps lead implementation of changes to ensure adherence.
- Helps implement employee recognition and engagement programs to promote high employee morale
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree in human resources, business or related field preferred
Skills/Experience:
- 1-2 years of professional experience in human resources or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge and professional experience in planning and policy, talent management, selection, compensation, benefits, training and staff development, employee relations, and performance management.
- Proficiency in business and human resources related computer applications, which may include talent management systems, time and attendance systems, etc.
- Strong ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Superb verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to perform with or without direct supervision
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources.
- SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or equivalent a plus
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $30,000.00 - $35,000.00
