The Northeast Ohio Conservation Coordinator works out of the Northeast Ohio Field Office located in Rock Creek, Ohio, and provides administrative, research, contract, project management and other general assistance to the Central Lake Erie Basin Program staff working toward the achievement of protection, conservation, education, or stewardship goals in Northeast Ohio.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Northeast Ohio Conservation Coordinator will provide support for the Central Lake Erie Basin Program including volunteer coordination, and program administration as well as other general assistance to program staff working toward the achievement of protection, conservation, education, or stewardship goals in Northeast Ohio. The Coordinator will provide leadership and direction to volunteers and will work cooperatively with Conservancy staff and members, as well as partner organizations, agencies and businesses. Responsibilities include coordination of programming and activities at the Dr. James K. Bissell Nature Center and the Team Nature Center volunteer group, and organization and leadership for the Northeast Ohio Preserve Steward Program.  The Coordinator will also assist to implement the Conservancy’s Youth Safety Program in Northeast Ohio. The Coordinator will ensure that youth safety protocols are in place, appropriate documents are developed, maintained and updated, and appropriate trainings are provided.

The Coordinator will assist in the implementation of preserve management plans, manage the hunting program in Northeast Ohio, and coordinate research activities. They will also manage other contracts and grants associated with restoration, stewardship, and recreation activities in Northeast Ohio. They may also assist in performing land management activities. The Coordinator may manage conservation data, participate in conservation planning, develop project packages, respond to landowner inquiries and maintain manual project records.  May include collecting, assembling and analyzing various types of data, in the field or through document surveys, producing maps using GIS software and assisting in the production of reports.  Work may be done in the field or be based entirely in an office setting, compiling the information collected by others.
This position is being posted with a 1 year start with employment conditional on funding support and possibility of extension.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supervise no staff, but may direct work of volunteers, interns, contractors, or technicians covering a wide geographic area.
  • Coordinates multiple tasks or projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, purchasing equipment and supplies as provided for in budget, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets. 
  • Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.  
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  
  • Assists with biological monitoring; data collection, compilation and analysis.
  • Makes day to day decision as delegated by the supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite and ArcGIS  
  • Experience with natural systems.                    
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience handling standard business communications; ability to write and edit correspondence and formal reports.
  • Time management skills to support planning, scheduling and tracking of multiple project activities, work plans, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. Youth Safety, First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated
  • 2-4 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.  
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources and work independently.
  • Some experience managing volunteers or interns
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to coordinate project information from a number of sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form, with the public, donors, members, scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information.  
  • Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
  • Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred.
  • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability.  
  • Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
