The Ecological Restoration Crew Member is a 6-month full-time, short-term position based out of an office/shop located in Rock Creek, Ohio. The Crew Member reports to the Coastal Invasives Project Manager and supports the implementation of ecological restoration projects throughout Northeast Ohio. The 2-person strike team will work closely with project partners to survey and control invasive species throughout project sites in Northeast Ohio including marshes, sedge meadows, fens, bogs, riparian and wooded areas. Strike team members will work almost exclusively in the field to carry out all on-the-ground activities specified in the project. On a daily basis, s/he will control invasive, non-native plant species through herbicide and mechanical applications. S/he will help implement the education/outreach plan by answering questions from the general public. S/he will also be responsible for equipment preparation, use, and maintenance; use of GPS unit and related devices; accurate record keeping; and other responsibilities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Use chemical and manual methods to control invasive, non-native plant species throughout project sites.
• Use GPS and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify, record and map non-native, invasive species’ presence and locations throughout project sites.
• Verbally communicate (via two-way radios) with other team members to ensure efficient, effective and safe working conditions at all times.
• Use and maintain equipment, vehicles, trailers, GPS units and tools.
• Use of Argo amphibious vehicle in water and on land.
• Distribute educational materials and answer questions from the general public.
• Navigate natural areas with map and compass.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
• Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks.
• May be responsible for purchases and record keeping.
• May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision.
• Works as part of a team and does not supervise staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma and 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
• Experience recognizing plant species, particularly by winter twig ID
• Experience operating various types of equipment.
• Experience performing physical work.
• Experience working in a team environment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma and 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant species as required, to perform invasive species management activities.
• Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; Argo, herbicide sprayers, hand tools, loppers, brush cutters, two-way radio, etc.)
• Ability to follow instructions from supervisor and colleagues.
• Ability to perform physical work, often under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
• Valid driver’s license.
• Experience using computers with Microsoft software applications and to access internet.
• Experience using hand-held GPS devices to record data and use of database systems for maintaining field records.
