Primary responsibilities include supervision of all wellness and group exercise programs, including coordinating programs, fitness assessments, personal training assignments, equipment orientations, member orientation and special events, and instruction as needed.  Preferred candidate will have ability to teach or be trained to teach group exercise classes as well.  Candidate will also oversee Fit Start and Chronic Disease Prevention.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Directs wellness floor staff, group exercise coordinator and staff of the department in their respective responsibilities.
  • Recruits, trains and recognizes wellness and group exercise staff.
  • Focused approach to small group training and personal training implementation plan resulting in higher participation rate in both program areas.
  • Reviews and evaluates the program enrollment, and services provided by the Wellness Department and communicates findings to their supervisor.
  • Identifies new and innovative programs in the area of health and wellness, while targeting youth, adults, seniors, and families with an emphasis on increased membership retention.
  • Attends weekly staff meeting with branch executive and branch program directors.
  • Orients new wellness staff and provides guidance and clarification of work duties and assignments.
  • Supervises the wellness center and free weight room by being attentive to all participants to protect their safety.  Instructs members and participants on safe exercise techniques including, but not limited to warm-up and stretching progression, aerobic conditioning, strength training, proper use of center equipment and workout routine.
  • Maintains all equipment on fitness floor and group exercise space ensuring safety and proper upkeep.
  • Instructs group exercise classes based on personal experience and need of the YMCA.
  • Facilitates annual and quarterly wellness programming including member challenges, etc.
  • Ensure cleanliness of fitness center through daily cleaning checklist and equipment maintenance plan.
  • Provides leadership and support to campaign and volunteer committees as needed.
  • Develops and manages annual budget ensuring financial success of department and thus the YMCA.
  • Works with Association Membership and Association Wellness Specialist to optimize the member experience.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Health and Wellness or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Preferred two years experience working in the field or relatable professional experience.
  • Required certifications:  CPR, First Aid, AED, national Certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, YMCA of the USA) in personal training.
  • Nationally recognized Group Exercse certification preferred.
  • YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 90 days of hire.
  • At least one year of experience in personal training and/or wellness consultation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $35,000.00
