The Operations Director (OD) will be tasked with the oversight of South Mountain YMCA Camps' program operations. The individual in this position will directly supervise Program Directors (Camp Conrad Weiser, Bynden Wood, Outdoor Center, Equestrian Center); providing leadership, coordination, and support services in the pursuit of excellence in programming and visitor engagement. In coordination with the CEO, the OD will work to implement marketing strategies for all program departments. Working with the Volunteer Services Coordinator, the OD will assist in recruiting, orienting and assigning volunteers to assist in the mission of the South Mountain YMCA Camps. Living on site is a requirement of the job.
- 1ST Team: Desire to perform as a member of the leadership team of the South Mountain YMCA Camps. The OD will serve as part of the management team including the CEO, Controller, Registrar and Facilities Director.

- Program Quality and Development: Oversees program development, standards of program delivery, standardization of content, quality assurance, and evaluation. Exceed ACA standards in every season of operation, CHA standards, and Y-USA Best Practices (Mission Driven Quality Promises). Models and practices best practices in customer service.
- Staff Development/Supervision: Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the program directors (Camp Conrad Weiser, Bynden Wood Day Camp, the Outdoor Center, and the Equestrian Center). Coordinates the screening, hiring, training, development, and evaluation for all three programs staff teams. Encourages cross-training and cross-promotion between departments.
- Volunteer Development: Actively cultivates community volunteers to serve at camp in any number of capacities (i.e. program, development, policy). Recruits volunteers through service club presentations and other opportunities.
- Balanced Budget: Controls expenses and generates program income as it relates to the Program Departments (Camp Conrad Weiser, Bynden Wood Day Camp, the Outdoor Center, and the Equestrian Center).
- Financial Development: Takes a lead role in the Reach Out for Youth Campaign (association annual campaign).
- Strategic Planning: Participates in strategic planning that considers the needs of our programs, the South Mountain YMCA Camps, and the region we serve. Ensures the implementation of the strategic plan as it relates to the program departments.
- Risk Management: Ensures the safety of all participants and staff. Reviews and implements the crisis management plan, emergency action plans, workers’ compensation procedures, risk management audits, etc. Hires and coordinates health care personnel for the summer camps, meeting or exceeding all ACA requirements.
- Transportation and Logistics: Assists the program directors in evaluating their transportation needs (vans, busses, planes, etc.), with an eye for safety and opportunities to share resources across departments. In concert with the Facilities Director, recommends rentals and purchases and books accordingly.
- Partnership Development and Maintenance: Working with program directors and the CEO, the OD becomes the point of contact for international partnerships, YMCA partnerships, and large-scale program partnerships (NMFA, Camp Highlight, Camp Frog, etc.). Works to develop and expand partnerships that meet our mission and contribute to our financial health.
- Marketing and Communications: Represents and promotes all programs locally, regionally, internationally (when needed), as well as through partner YMCAs leveraging the YMCA of the USA’s brand, as well as the unique South Mountain YMCA Camps brand.
- Maintain Records: Maintains and reviews records related to all programs, which may include impact/asset evaluations of all programs (which would assist in fundraising), operations, staff, and facilities.
- YMCA Success: Contributes time and effort to all departments when necessary to ensure the success and health of the YMCA. As a full-time, exempt member of the SMYMCA team living on site, the OD is expected to maintain a flexible work week of 50+ hours per week with the understanding that the job may require more or fewer hours depending on the season and requirements of our programs.
The Operations Director must have high level organizational skills, able to meet deadlines and manage interruptions. 5 years of experience in camping services is required (environmental education, outdoor recreation, and summer camping), with a minim of 3 years in supervisory roles. The ability to work a flexible schedule which will include nights and weekends is expected. This person will attain YMCA of the USA Multi-Team / Branch Leader status within 3 years of beginning the position. This Operations Director must demonstrate experience and competency in:
