Teach For America-Eastern North Carolina (ENC) seeks a Senior Managing Director, Program Continuum (SMD, PC) to design and lead a program that delivers on our commitment to develop and cultivate the leadership skills and mindsets necessary for systems – change through classroom teaching.  This role is critical to our efforts to maximize Teach For America’s impact in Eastern North Carolina.

The SMD, PC oversees our work to ensure we have a diverse corps, and support corps members in becoming effective teachers and leaders in ENC.  This person also manages the region’s largest team and must have demonstrated success managing and coaching others through multiple layers and levels. He/she must deeply embody our regional team and organizational values, be committed to engaging on issues of diversity, including race, class, and privilege, and operate in ways that honor and uplift our students and communities. To be successful, this individual must thrive in an entrepreneurial environment and possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility for achieving ambitious results.

The SMD, Program Continuum will report directly to and work closely with the Executive Director to craft a compelling vision for our program and partner with students, families, schools, districts, community organizations and local leaders to ensure we are working with our communities to further collective impact

Areas of Responsibility: 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Cultural Leadership and Team Management
Manage and develop team leads across the continuum teams, including:

  • Direct coaching and managing of team members, as well as managing through layers - this person will oversee the teams that make up the largest contingent of our staff
  • Recruit, cultivate and hire for staff positions on the program continuum team
  • Ensure team members are maximizing their individual potential and receiving professional development both to enhance their skills on staff and as part of the community effort in Eastern North Carolina
  • Create a strong culture rooted in our core values
  • Foster cross-functional and collaborative partnerships with all leaders and team members within the Program Continuum (Leadership Continuum, CM Pipelines, Teacher Leadership Development, and Local Leadership Teams) to ensure a seamless transition for corps members from matriculation to residency and through the corps experience.
  • Manage up to and advise the Executive Director

Strategy & Program Alignment

  • Ensure each program continuum sub-team is on track to meet program goals aligned with our region’s strategic plan
  • Develop a comprehensive strategic plan for our program continuum team with outcomes and targets to achieve this vision
  • Ensure alignment and drive execution of vision across our program continuum, through investing and mobilizing our regional team and internal and external stakeholders

Relationship Building & Partnerships

  • Build, cultivate, and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Build catalytic partnerships, relationships, and networks that lead to the development of our leadership force

Regional Team Responsibilities 

  • Participate in corps member selection (about 4 days total throughout the year)
  • Matriculate new corps members during 4-5 confirmation windows throughout the year
  • Staff large-scale regional events and conferences, often times for a whole day or multiple days at a time, including some Saturdays
  • Attend and participate in all-staff meetings, retreats, small team cohorts, and step backs throughout the year
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 

Prior Experience

  • Experience leading organizational change efforts preferred
  • Demonstrated success managing and coaching teams and individuals to results; experience and success in managing through layers of an organization
  • Experience cultivating internal and external constituencies and building long-term relationships to achieve broad, mutually satisfying goals
  • Experience coaching and developing educators through a lens of diversity and equity
  • Demonstrated deep commitment and belief in our students, families, and local communities in Eastern North Carolina preferred
  • Demonstrated deep commitment to and belief in Teach For America's mission, theory of change and core values
  • Demonstrated success in intentionally building strong team culture that leverages the unique strengths and skillsets of each member of the team

Work Demands

  • Ability to travel across the region (5-6 times per month) 
  • Occasional overnight travel (3-4 times per year) required for attendance at various local and national conferences
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required

Skills

  • Exceptional leadership coaching skills and demonstrated ability to coach others to ambitious outcomes
  • Possess an understanding and deep belief in fostering culturally responsive educators
  • Passionate about the mission of Teach For America and knowledgeable about educational equity and the education landscape of Eastern North Carolina 
  • Strong ability to set vision and direction and invest others in that vision
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate good judgment
  • Strong ability to build relationships and tailor approach toward the perspectives of others across a variety of stakeholders
