Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director and in collaboration with the Member Engagement Team and Branch Leadership, the Healthy Living Director fulfills the YMCA of the Triangle Area and local branch vision for member engagement and quality programming in the areas of Wellness, Group Exercise and Evidence Based Impact Programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides leadership in realizing the vision set by the YMCA of the Triangle Area Program Guidelines for the Healthy Living Department - Wellness, Group Exercise and Personal Training Programs and Evidence Based Impact Programs.
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring and on-boarding of high quality staff for all Healthy Living Department staff.
  • Responsible for continued staff development on training frameworks.
  • Ensures staff remain current in all certifications.
  • Responsible for all Healthy Living Department administrative duties including (but not limited to) payroll, and staff and program scheduling for all areas of supervision.
  • Responsible for budget development and implementation.
  • Directly leads, supervises and evaluates all part time wellness coaches, group exercise instructors, personal trainers and evidence based impact program staff.  With that staff, has full responsibility for maintaining delivery of high quality wellness programs through them, makes certain that all staff are, and stay, certified with as necessary for the positions they hold, and that the wellness floor is staffed appropriately.
  • Regularly evaluates wellness and group exercise programs to provide high level service to our members. 
  • Ensures member engagement through connecting members to personalized wellness experiences through orientations, fitness assessments and personal training opportunities.
  • Teaches group water and land exercise classes as needed.
  • Works the wellness floor as a Wellness Coach as needed. 
  • Leads/assists with monthly association initiatives and membership appreciation events and serves as a member of the Branch Member Engagement Team.
  • Serves as part of the Director Team which includes working evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Participates in Association events and committees as needed.
  • Provides leadership for the annual fundraising campaign through leading staff and volunteer teams to meet set goals.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Educational Background: 
This position requires a baccalaureate undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in fitness, health, management or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • He/she must have the appropriate certifications and training in order to teach and direct a variety of wellness programs.
  • The candidate should possess or work towards obtaining an ACE, AFFA, NSCA, or ACSM Personal Training Certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Must possess or work towards a Group Fitness Certification, have experience with MOSSA or Les Mills and be able to teach a variety of group exercise formats. Must have and maintain current certifications in CPR and First Aid.
  • The position requires that the incumbent be experienced and passionate about member engagement and developing member wellness goals.
  • He/she must be professional, courteous and friendly, have a high level of initiative and be a self-starter.
  • He/she must have excellent communication skills, be well organized, and be able to respond appropriately in a dynamic, fluid environment.
  • He/She must be highly relational, demonstrate strong leadership ability as well as an understanding of quality programming.
