Context: The Clean Energy Program Manager organizes and implements one or more clean energy programs, campaigns or initiatives such as supporting the 2018 NC Executive Order to address climate change and transition to a clean energy economy.

Scope: Under direction of the State Director or the Chapter Director of Government Relations, implements the Chapter’s approved clean energy programmatic objectives. The Clean Energy Program Manager works to design and implement campaign strategies for the N.C. Chapter. Creates educational and promotional materials and content for a range of different audiences. Works with N.C. Sierra Club local groups around the state on campaigns related to clean energy. Represents the Sierra Club to partner organizations, the media, policymakers and executive branch agencies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop, coordinate and implement campaign strategies for just and equitable clean energy programs and projects in accordance with Chapter and national club policies.
  • Develop educational and campaign materials and training as needed to members and volunteer leaders on issues relating to clean energy and climate change. This may include writing and/or editing action alerts, fact sheets, tool kits, letters to policy makers, newsletter articles, blogs, webinars and media communications documents as needed.
  • Support, motivate and encourage grassroots clean energy campaign activities by providing guidance and information to Sierra Club members. 
  • Seek out and develop contacts with allied organizations, the media, and staff in government agencies to further campaign objectives.
  • Work closely with the Chapter’s organizing team to plan, coordinate and implement grassroots and grasstops organizing strategies. 
  • Mobilize grassroots activists to take action on clean energy issues.
  • Make presentations to community and governmental bodies regarding Chapter energy-related campaigns.  Work with Chapter communications staff to produce press releases and communications materials to inform Club membership and the public. 
  • Track key energy policy activities in North Carolina, the Southeast and nationally.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to develop energy policy positions, implement policy strategy, and identify opportunities to move clean energy forward in North Carolina.
  • Identify and develop solutions to legislative, regulatory, and local issues that have the potential to affect solar and wind development in North Carolina.
  • Network with public officials, utilities, and key partners in the state to influence energy policy.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
BA, JD or MS/MA/MEM in environmental policy, environmental science, economics, engineering, public policy or related fields.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of the renewable energy industry, electricity markets and trends in the region and knowledge of environmental issues and challenges affecting North Carolina.
  • 1-2 years of experience in the environmental field that includes research and advocacy on campaigns, press relations and public speaking.
  • Familiarity with issues affecting the solar and/or wind industry in North Carolina, nationally and regionally and experience in renewable energy policy analysis; building consensus with diverse stakeholders around policy initiatives; communicating effectively with regulators, utilities, and other leaders
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Interest in and/or experience working with state government.
