The Vice President of Membership and Volunteerism provides vision, leadership and hands-on support for the YMCA of the Triangle’s overall membership and volunteer functions. This position will work in close collaboration with other colleagues and is responsible for driving overall strategy and making key decisions to elevate work in areas such as member relations, sales, retention, corporate membership, and Togetherhood to meet organizational goals of significantly growing and maintaining membership and volunteerism in the Y’s service areas.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide vision and leadership to the design and implementation of a strategic membership development plan to attract, recruit, retain and engage members in the mission and cause of the Y.
- Provide vision, leadership and resources that drive member satisfaction, recruitment and retention and support members on their path through membership, philanthropy and volunteerism.
- Works closely with COO, CODO, CXO and VP of Healthy Living to:
- Refine membership model in order to maximize potential growth, increase revenue and enhance engagement strategy.
- Develop strategies to improve membership experience and increase overall membership, including corporate membership.
- Provide leadership in sales, including the development of a sales philosophy, annual sales plan and daily accountability metrics.
- Develop and implement formal membership retention and recovery programs.
- Provides leadership to Corporate Membership specifically focusing on existing account growth and account development.
- In collaboration with the Vice President of Healthy Living:
- Supports the development of Corporate Wellness programming
- works collaboratively with Membership IQ Team, Associate Branch Executive Directors, Branch Executive Directors and Regional Vice Presidents, to provide on-going leadership and direction to membership, Y Connect, 8 weeks to a Better You, New Member 30-60-90 day engagement strategies related to SEER and retention.
- Facilitate monthly associates meeting.
- Accountable for the work of the Membership IQ team and other cross departmental teams related to membership. Serve as coach for staff who lead membership specific teams.
- Provides Association leadership for Togetherhood Program; implement and strengthen existing Association volunteer strategies. Develop and direct the management of an efficient tracking system that allows for accurate data collection and reporting.
- Responsible for Membership SEER Base Metrics Plan: Coordinate SEER Webinar, create Senior Leadership Snapshot, work with Branches to develop branch action plans
- Accountable for providing specific focus on opening new YMCA branches with excellence by serving as the on-site point of sale lead for the first 3-6 months of a branches’ opening.
- Research and make recommendations on new membership benefits, assisting with cost-benefit analyses for potential new programs, pricing, benefits and value, making recommendations
- Works in conjunction with Marketing and Communication on the implementation of membership campaigns (with branch staff) supporting efforts to increase and retain memberships.
- In conjunction with the Finance Department and Marketing and Communications Department, analyze membership data & produce periodic reports for Association leaders. Collect information on membership trends, models, & dues revenue in comparable associations for benchmarking purposes.
- In collaboration with Learning and Leadership Development, develops and coordinates training sessions for all staff related to membership and sales including M School.
- In collaboration with Diversity and Inclusion, ensure that all sales and membership development plans include attention to diversity and inclusion.
- Ongoing evaluation and execution of membership areas around operational effectiveness to improve our impact and effectiveness in key areas such as, service delivery methods, staffing for effectiveness, etc.
- Assists in developing grant proposals and leading grant funded programs related to membership. Manages several key vendor relationships for annual campaign support.
- Other duties and responsibilities assigned by Association.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of commensurate experience in a membership-based organization
Skills/Experience:
- Understanding and commitment to the YMCA Mission and Cause
- Understanding of branch work and how to operationalize a program in a branch
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including phone etiquette, writing, proof reading, presentation and speaking skills
- Strong persuasive skills required in order to assist in “selling” vision, processes and programs to help increase membership locally including reaching and/or expanding into markets not served or are underserved
- Knowledge of content leadership, subject matter expertise, pricing/sales and customer retention, program development and needs assessment
- Proven success in strategy development and implementation
- Supervisory/management experience required
- Demonstrated experience working with and translating large data bases of numeric and statistical data in order to fully understand current and projected demographic changes, population shifts, economic forecasts, etc.
- Demonstrated proficiency and experience in customer service with high standards of timeliness and responsiveness
- Ability to manage and accomplish multiple projects and work assignments with little supervision
- Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative environment where teamwork, collegiality and self-motivation are necessary for success
- Direct experience leading membership development and volunteers
