Boat Launch Steward

Boat Launch Stewards will visit assigned boat launch locations along Eastern Lake Ontario to interact with the public and gather lake-user information, conduct voluntary watercraft and equipment inspections and familiarize the public with aquatic invasive species information.  Stewards will provide their own vehicle and will report directly to assigned job sites. Training will be provided for all aspects of these positions. This is a temporary, seasonal position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Boat Launch Stewards will participate in watercraft inspections, conducting voluntary surveys and data collection, AIS identification, interactions with the public and distribution of educational materials. This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Ability to approach the public in a courteous, respectful manner.
  • Fill out digital or paper survey sheets for each inspection. 
  • Ensure consistent and quality data collection and management.
  • Physical removal of AIS in provided disposal location.
  • Maintains field equipment and AIS portable disposal stations.
  • Maintains a friendly and non-confrontational demeanor at all times. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks
  • May work under infrequent supervision
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct work groups, staff, citizen scientists or volunteers.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with the basics of boating, angling, and common outdoor recreation. 
  • Swim experience.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  •  High school diploma and 1-2 years training in science-related/natural resources field.
  •  Experience with the aquatic invasive species (AIS) in the Eastern Lake Ontario Region and methods used to prevent further spread of AIS. 
  •  Reliable transportation to get to job sites 
  •  Ability to help plan and direct work groups, staff, citizen scientists or volunteers.
  •  Self-motivated with the capability to work with little to no supervision. 
  •  Excellent communication skills, outgoing personality with ability to comfortably speak to the general public.
  •  Experience working outdoors.
