Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Camp Lakewood, the Outdoor Education Director will be responsible for the development, implementation, staffing and program services for Outdoor Education, school and church groups, the nature center, weekend groups staying at Camp Lakewood (mid-August through the end of May).  Duties include implementing new experiential outdoor and environmental education programs, improving existing programs, scheduling groups and internal logistics, assisting with staff recruitment and training, making sales calls and delivering presentations, and developing, promoting and managing Camp Lakewood’s Outdoor Education program.

The Outdoor Education Director will provide on‑going programs and staff evaluations to insure high quality delivery of programs.  The Outdoor Education Director will maintain proper staffing levels, and is responsible for advance planning, execution and evaluation of the day‑to‑day programmatic and logistical operations of Camp Lakewood’s Outdoor Education program.  The Director will also model, practice and carry out the "Y" values of Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, Respect and Faith

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for the planning, implementation, provision and evaluation of Camp Lakewood Outdoor Education programs and conferences, including Adventure Guides, school groups, teambuilding groups, scout/youth groups, all conferences/meetings held at Camp Lakewood.
  • Coordinate group arrangements with Camp Lakewood Dining Hall manager and supervise all dining hall programming, activities, and procedures during a group’s stay.  Report dining-hall related problems, concerns or necessary changes to the Food Service Director.
  • Develop programs/activities for staff and campers to increase awareness of environmental issues.
  • Ensure safety in all Camp Lakewood Outdoor Education programs and conferences.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with the directors and staff of Parkway School Districts, Adventure Guides, church groups, school groups, scout groups, and other programs.
  • Assist with recruiting, selecting, supervising and evaluating staff and volunteers for the Outdoor Education program, providing them with the resources necessary for them to perform assigned tasks at a high level of competence.
  • Become belay certified and tower certified.
  • Assists in training all staff on risk management, utilizing the Gateway Region’s training program and incorporating zero accident attitudes.
  • Responsible for assisting with the production and distribution of weekly staff schedules for all Outdoor education programs.
  • Responsible for enforcing all staff policies and procedures with subordinate staff.
  • Prepare the annual Outdoor Education Department budget and operate within the set budgetary limits for the duration of the fiscal year. 
  • Follow established guidelines for all purchases, and ensure proper billing information is given to the accounting department for payment of fees.
  • Contribute to the YMCA of the Ozarks cost containment by properly allocating supplies, and constantly looking for ways to save money on supplies, personnel, and daily energy costs.
  • Inspect Lakewood facilities to ensure proper maintenance and coordinate litter control efforts, following up with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, Director of Camp Lakewood and maintenance staff to see that appropriate changes and repairs are completed.  Overall goal is to maintain a safe and clean environment for all guests and campers.
  • Responsible for maintaining positive working relationships with support services departments including group sales, Triangle Y Ranch, maintenance, food service, and housekeeping to provide for the comfort and safety of Camp Lakewood guests.
  • Responsible for assisting with coordination of all aspects of program-related transportation including schedule coordination, vehicle care, periodic maintenance, and usage tracking.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive annual marketing plan and calendar for Camp Lakewood Outdoor Education program, with an emphasis on retention of current clientele.
  • Develop and implement procedures and actions to increase the satisfaction and learning experience of campers and staff.
  • Respond to guest and group leader questions and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Establish supportive relationships with children and implement developmentally appropriate techniques of behavior management and group management.
  • Enforce customer service and proper role modeling by all staff through training, personal example and evaluation.
  • Treat guests with respect and consideration, regardless of their sex, race, religion, family background or ability.
  • Responsible for participating in the implementation of YMCA management systems as they apply to assisting with World Service Drives, United Way Drives, Capital and Partner Campaigns, Staff Training, etc.
  • Responsible for attending and contributing to weekly Program staff meetings and Directors’ meetings.
  • Carry out responsibilities and duties of Relationship Manager on Duty (RMOD), as assigned.
  • Responsible for performing other job-related tasks as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree or Related Experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in camp, resort or outdoor skills programming.
  • Management experience with a strong working knowledge of computers and budget management.

Salary: $35,200.00
