The YMCA of the Seacoast in Portsmouth, NH is currently seeking a Director of Healthy Living. The successful candidate will be responsible for member involvement and satisfaction as they participate in YMCA health and wellness programs and activities. This role will provide an environment in which members and guests connect and establish strong relationships with the YMCA community that will support members’ individual goals and pursuits along with fostering the understanding and engagement with the YMCA mission.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Ensure a clean, safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment for members and guests while they are utilizing and participating in all wellness-related programs or services.
  • Actively participate in fitness center coaching, personal training, group fitness class instruction and facilitate and coach HLI initiatives.
  • Oversee and implement an equipment preventive maintenance schedule to ensure that all related wellness equipment is functioning properly at all times.
  • Assess, improve and expand existing health and wellness programs based on member and staff feedback in accordance with the branch strategic plans and supervisors direction.
  • Educate staff to record all accident/incident reports, participant statistics, facility and equipment maintenance as required by the Association and supervisor.
  • Ensure adequate and proper staffing of the wellness center and affiliated group wellness classes at all times.
  • Ensure that staff is either actively engaged with assisting and greeting members while on duty in the wellness center. Staff should be constantly observing member activity and assisting and encouraging where needed.
  • Educate staff in the best practices exercises relevant to the equipment and programs available in the facility. Offering staff trainings to update skills for optimal member support.
  • In accordance with association guidelines conduct all related hiring and evaluation processes for health and wellness personnel.
  • Supervise Group Exercise staff, providing guidance and direction of the group exercise, senior and special needs programs and initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Membership director to develop and promote membership acquisition and retention efforts for YMCA members.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on Healthy Living budget in the established means on a monthly basis and develop action plans for addressing issues or shortfalls when necessary.
  • Work with the Data Management department to ensure all program and personal training registrations, attendance records and billing/accounts receivable is effective, timely, and accurate.
  • Work with the Marketing department to establish and appropriate marketing communications plan for all wellness programs, member incentives and special events.
  • Through the branch director, work with the Advisory Boards and the program committee on any long-term wellness related strategic projects.
  • Model the Character Counts values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility and work to develop these values in all members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
  • Lead department annually in Annual Campaign and Reach Out for Youth and Families events.
  • Attend all meetings and training sessions as mandated by your supervisor.
Educational Background: 
A minimum 2 year degree is Exercise Science is preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Include a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in managing wellness programs and staff to include personal training, group exercise and youth fitness programming.
  • Experience in youth programs will also benefit candidates.
  • A current recognized personal training and group exercise certification along with first aid, CPR and AED training are required. 
Compensation/Benefits: 

This is a full-time, salary exempt position with a full benefits package including health, dental, Y retirement, life and disability, generous paid time off plan, a free 2 Adult Family membership as well as child care, camp and program discounts.

Salary: $38,000.00 - $42,000.00
