The Alzheimer's Association, Oregon Chapter provides a variety of education, information and support services to persons with dementia, their families, health care professionals, and the community. The Program Specialist is primarily responsible for coordinating and conducting educational programs in the community and providing support and assistance to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their family in the counties assigned to their geographic area. The individual also supports activities that promote the services of the chapter.   

Areas of Responsibility: 

Advancing Care and Support 

  • Coordinates programs and services for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related diseases, caregivers, health care professionals and community organizations.  
  • Conducts outreach and builds working relationships with service providers, care facilities, healthcare professionals, community partners and other stakeholders who collaborate on Association initiatives. 
  • Coordinate and respond to referrals from healthcare professionals. 
  • Responds to information, referral, and care consultations using established resources and tools. Follows up as appropriate.  
  • Researches and identifies new grant funding opportunities. 
  • Promotes opportunities for others to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association through recruitment of advocates, volunteer opportunities and other organizational initiatives.  
  • Works in conjunction with Marketing and Communications team to assure timely and effective public relations and marketing of educational support services and programs.  
  • Remains knowledgeable and current in information related to Alzheimer’s and related diseases, as well as national, state, and local initiatives that affect the targeted population. 

Volunteer Oversight  

  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers for all aspects of program delivery and management.  

Development and Operational Effectiveness 

  • Fully participates in and promotes all fundraising initiatives for the chapter.  
  • Works with Program Team to assure that requirements for grant-funded programs and services are met. 
  • Inputs all required information in database on a timely basis.  
  • Ensures new community resources and related events are submitted to databases.  
  • Maintains accurate records of program and event participation and other metrics. 
  • Manages activities within budgeted parameters.  
  • Works with the Program Director and Marketing and Communications Team regarding updates from the national office to ensure uniformity of materials and presentation content. 
  • Submits timely and accurate records and reports, newsletter articles and other information as requested by chapter staff. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Health care related field preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three years experience in health care guiding, coaching, and supporting individuals and their family preferred.  
  • Understanding of the disease process and options for caregiver interventions. 
  • Database experience preferred.  
  • Commitment to the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. 
  • Knowledge of community resources. 
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people including persons with dementia, family caregivers, volunteers, and community partners. 
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, implement and evaluate program initiatives. 
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and strong public speaking skills. 
  • Ability to listen effectively with good decision-making skills. 
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite. 
  • Experience in volunteer management and support.  
  • Ability to work independently without daily, onsite supervision. Equally important is the need to work well as part of a team. 
  • Professional presence and conduct.
