Context: The State Conservation Director manages the Chapter’s conservation, legislative, and political programs. They work with chapter volunteers, staff, and National programs to develop and implement the Sierra Club’s priority programs in Oregon.
Scope: The State Conservation Director is responsible for developing and implementing integrated campaign plans. They, in defined program areas, manage staff, budgets, activities, volunteer engagement and relationships with media and decision makers.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Works with lead volunteers, chapter staff, national staff, and partner organizations to plan, develop, and implement short and long term conservation goals and campaigns. Oversees grassroots recruitment and leadership development programs.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements legislative strategies as approved by chapter leadership. Assists lead volunteers with developing and advocating Sierra Club positions on state legislation. Lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials, business leaders, governmental agencies, and other non-profit organizations.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements the Chapter’s political program as approved by chapter leadership including candidate recruitment, endorsements, and conducting election campaign activities. Ensures compliance with all state and federal lobbying and political campaign laws.
- Seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s equity, inclusion and justice initiatives through partnerships and engagement strategies. Follow the Jemez Principles for Democratic organizing and builds partnerships that are inclusive of impacted communities in the planning, decision-making, and implementation of campaigns.
- Works with local volunteer leaders, and national campaigns and capacities, to develop unifying strategies and narratives across priority campaigns. Assists lead volunteers with developing and executing a public communication strategy to complement priority campaigns.
- Manages Chapter staff and volunteers in assigned program areas. Assigns goals, develops work plans, trains, and motivates. Reviews staff time reporting, ensures compliance with local law and organization policy, and conducts performance reviews.
- Assists in fundraising, budgeting, and financial reporting in designated program areas.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
BA/BS degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.
Skills/Experience:
- 4 years experience in the environmental field that includes grassroots organizing, media relations, and campaign planning and implementation.
- Experience with employee supervision.
- Prior experience and knowledge of the legislative process.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills
- Demonstrated excellence working with volunteers.
