The Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for Oregon (ADCFR) conceives, designs, and leads effective multi-year strategies and plans for the cultivation and solicitation of corporate, foundation and individual donors and prospects.
The Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations plays a pivotal role within the Oregon chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The position will have a significant impact on Oregon’s natural systems and how nature and people thrive together, by partnering with conservation leaders in Oregon, nationally and around the world to steer dollars to high impact conservation projects. It is an opportunity for someone who has a great appetite for learning and engaging on ideas and strategies to address today’s most pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, ocean health, habitat restoration, water quality, and a variety of conservation innovations. This position will translate complex science and conservation into compelling cases for donor support, integrating each prospect’s interests into the materials. Will involve maintaining a knowledge of key issues in conservation and the Conservancy’s leading strategies in Oregon, regionally, and globally. This individual will work closely with the Oregon philanthropy team, and members of the Board of Trustees as needed, and will periodically engage business leaders to advise conservation initiatives. The position will have support for prospect research, some writing, and administrative functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Manage a portfolio of 60-80 corporate, individual and foundation donors, primarily individuals and foundations. Responsible for 50 – 70 moves and 10-20 letters of intent or proposals annually. Annual fundraising goal of $500,000 or more.
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead as needed, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
- Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and meeting fundraising objectives.
- Manage assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and setting deadlines.
- May manage or participate in complex or sensitive negotiations.
- May supervise support or administrative staff.
- Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Travel frequently and on short notice, work long and flexible hours as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.

- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $25,000 or more.
- Experience in developing proposals of $25,000 or more.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and in coordinating projects.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
- Experience managing multiple tasks with attention to detail .
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
- Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Ability to develop customized foundation proposals with program budgets and reporting plans.
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
