The Associate Program Director will assist in supervising a team of lifeguards, swim instructors, and water fitness instructors, as well as assisting in managing swim lessons, water fitness classes, chemical checks, records, and serves members in accordance with rules and policies set forth by the Association. Other responsibilities include on-going staff training and certification, assisting in new program development, and assisting fiscal management of department budget. This position will primarily be scheduled to work Tuesday through Saturday.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assisting in all aquatics program administration
- Plan programs to meet branch and association goals and objectives
- Staff management: supervise, train and evaluate staff and volunteers in the aquatics department
- Support the development and implementation of the aquatics department budget
- Enforce and follow all pool rules set forth by the association
- Assume responsibility while on duty in the event of an emergency and follow all procedures
- Attend all required meetings
- Work 10-12 hours in programs (lifeguard, teaching lessons or water aerobics)
- Membership retention as it pertains to aquatics programming in relationship to organization’s retention plan.
- Maintain accurate records of pool usage, chemical readings etc.
- Provide leadership in pool maintenance area
- Lifeguard/instruct any shift needed
- Lead trainings/in-services for staff on a monthly basis
- Engage with members and community members in programs
- Recruit volunteers for and participate in the YMCA campaign
- Develop, implement special aquatics events (examples might include Decathlon, Movie nights, etc.)
- Self-development: seek appropriate training to carry out responsibilities for position, keep abreast of developments in assigned area, keep informed of changes, trends, and new techniques affecting YMCA programming
- Other duties as assigned
Educational Background:
College degree and/or extended experience in management
Skills/Experience:
Required Qualifications:
- Must pass YMCA background check
- Must be 21 years or older
- Minimum of two years of experience in the field of aquatics, preferably in a leadership position.
- Current certifications in the following areas: Lifeguard by one of the following: Red Cross or YMCA (preferable), CPR and First Aid for the professional rescuer, LGI (or must be willing and able to obtain within 90 days), Certified Pool Operator (or must be willing and able to obtain within 90 days), WSI or YMCA of USA Swim Lesson Instructor.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a swim instructor
- Certification and/or experience teaching water fitness classes
- Certification and/or experience in pool maintenance
Essential Functions
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
- Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate management techniques.
- Strong verbal and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to substitute for all positions (lifeguard, swim lessons, water fitness)
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to supervise a variety of activities going on at the same time, large volume of aquatics programs and classes.
Compensation/Benefits:
Hourly: $14.00 - $20.00
