This position is a partnership between Confluence Environmental Center, AmeriCorps Program and The Nature Conservancy in Oregon. The Community Engagement Coordinator will advance The Nature Conservancy’s goals to engage and activate more Oregonians in conservation efforts. The Nature Conservancy’s Oregon volunteer program involves 1,000 community members in direct service each year, greatly expanding the capacity of our organization to conserve the land and waters on which all life depends. The Coordinator will build on the successes of previous AmeriCorps Members and join our volunteer programs team and help design, build and implement several urban engagement programs, including restoration work party and outreach programs targeted to an urban audience. The Coordinator will dedicate 45% of their time toward the strategic urban restoration work party program; 35% of their time toward the urban outreach and ambassador programs; and 20% of their time participating in Confluence led leadership development activities which include: Leadership Development Program, team meetings, National Service events and other self-directed development opportunities.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteer leaders to plan and implement urban restoration program.
  • Create stewardship activities that address needs and schedules of racially and economically diverse individuals and families.
  • Conduct outreach activities to engage diverse individuals and organizations in resource conservation activities.
  • Collaborate with staff to refine and expand volunteer ambassador program to engage more Oregonians in conservation.
  • Develop deeper community partnerships to support urban restoration and outreach programs.
  • Design and implement strategic volunteer recruitment plan for urban restoration and outreach programs.
  • Serve closely with staff to recognize volunteer participants in personal ways.
  • Track data and evaluate urban restoration and outreach programs.
  • Complete and submit all necessary paperwork and reports in a timely manner; abide by program policies; attend and complete all training and service requirements.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience or interest in building relationships with diverse populations, including immigrant or refugee populations, seniors, people of color, people with disabilities, or those with limited economic resources.
  • Desire to promote environmental stewardship to underserved communities.
  • Demonstrates independence, motivation and resourcefulness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to serve occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record and be comfortable driving groups of people in both urban and rural settings.
  • Willingness/openness to learn about and discuss racial equity and social justice issues.
  • Ability to serve as part of a diverse team.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and dependability.
  • AmeriCorps Members must be: 18 years of age or older; U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident; able to commit to the full term of service; able to successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest or experience in natural resources/conservation.
  • Experience managing projects for and supervising volunteers.
  • Background in cultural competency.
  • Ability to speak Spanish (or another language).
  • Familiarity with the region and green spaces is helpful, but not required.
  • Familiarity with low-income communities and/or communities of color.
  • Any combination of experience and education equivalent to 2 – 4 years.
Compensation/Benefits: 
  • $13,992 living allowance paid over the 11-month term of service (approx. $1,272 monthly, before taxes).
