The Market Development Manager – Haiti, Clean Cooking Alliance will lead the Project’s market development strategy in order to enable a market comprised of competitive, sustainable business models capable of attracting investment and successfully responding to demonstrated consumer demand. 

In addition to working closely with companies, the person that fills this role will also oversee consumer-facing, behavior change interventions designed to improve the demand for, and the adoption of, clean cooking solutions. Based on identified drivers of consumer demand and use, these strategies will apply cost-effective, audience-centered approaches. This work may also require offering technical advice to enterprises on marketing strategies, and developing strategic partnerships with organizations already targeting consumers in order to broaden communication reach. 

The Market Development Manager will work closely with her/his Alliance colleagues and lead the implementation of the market development component of the Project. This role will require close collaboration with the clean cooking enterprises to be supported by the Alliance, as well as service providers and relevant partners who have been involved in the Project design and who will continue to provide oversight and guidance during the implementation phase of the Project. 

The role will report directly to the Deputy Country Director – Haiti and closely collaborate with senior management members of the Alliance’s Private Sector & Investment team and Gender, Demand & Policy team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conduct a full market assessment; develop a detailed multiyear market development workplan.
  • Identify business models critical to market development, gaining clarity regarding 1) those already in existence that can be strengthened, 2) new models that will need to be developed, and 3) successful business models from other sectors that can be adapted to support clean cooking market growth.
  • Lead due diligence and manage grant, investment and TA programs, including the negotiation of milestones, delivery of advisory services, procurement of technical assistance/advisory providers, grant and investment administration, and reporting. 
  • Provide portfolio companies with connections to mentors, other funders/investors and potential partners, and conduct site visits as necessary.
  • Lead company due diligence and manage Alliance grants for marketing and behavior change, including design of RFPs, organizing proposal reviews, contracting, and ongoing oversight and monitoring.
  • Identify and foster strategic partnerships to further scale consumer-facing communications and expand accessibility and affordability of clean cooking products.
  • Provide strategic guidance to ensure demand and supply side efforts are well coordinated within a broader strategy, as well the broader Alliance program in Haiti, and partner programs.
  • Support other initiatives related to various key thematic aspects of growth of the sector, including consumer finance/financial inclusion, trade barriers (e.g. VAT/duty), last mile distribution, etc.
  • Implement private sector development and investment strategies and interventions as they relate to the Alliance value proposition of increasing investment in the sector. Develop and adapt grant and investment funds based on lessons learned and best practices. Disseminate information about strategy and learnings.
  • Provide input on the Project’s other components (e.g. gender, technology innovation) as they apply to market development themes and identify and hire technical support as required.
  • Support the implementation and usage of impact metrics applicable to clean cooking enterprises.
  • Lead the development and cultivation of relationships with funders, including but not limited to angel investors, impact funds, development finance institutions, foundations, and donor agencies. 
  • Perform other duties and/or tasks as assigned.
Educational Background: 
MBA with coursework in business management, finance, and marketing is preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a similar position.
  • A background in private equity/venture capital, entrepreneurship (e.g. as a founder/manager of early-stage venture), or management consulting – ideally with experience in emerging markets.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, clean cooking or energy access business models is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage programs and multiple stakeholders.
  • Personal commitment to Clean Cooking Alliance and UN Foundation’s vision.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative while working within a team, and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Alliance teams and UNF staff.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships across a wide range of functional expertise, organizations, and cultural backgrounds, in a demanding and fluid work environment.
  • Ability to frequently travel within Haiti and internationally. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, and Salesforce. Advanced Excel skills are required.
  • Fluency in English and French is required; fluency in Haitian Creole is desired.
  • Haitian nationals are preferred.
