This AmeriCorps position works with a Nature Conservancy partner, AZ Project WET, to present water conservation training and activities for students, enabling them to become better water stewards by learning about their watershed, taking action to save water and developing scientific questions to study the health of riparian waters.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Partner with Arizona Project WET to assist staff and teach at school water audits, at the water festivals, at biodiversity presentations in classrooms, and at riparian habitat exploration field days, making a positive community impact by meeting performance measures specified in the AmeriCorps grant for 2019-2020 awarded to The Nature Conservancy – Arizona.
  • Able to work with teachers, chaperones and large groups of children in natural settings on rough surfaces on trails and in riparian areas.
  • Train and manage community volunteers who teach students at Water Festivals and other water conservation educational activities.
  • Represents the Conservancy, AmeriCorps and Arizona Project WET at community events, school events, Conservancy events to raise the level of awareness about this project.
  • Performs administrative function as necessary to prepare presentation materials, produce training documents, record data, complete reports specific to the position.
  • This position does have recurring access to vulnerable populations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Duties are performed under direct supervision and established guidelines.

  • Opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks and projects.  May have full opportunity to direct individual projects.  Refers questions beyond project scope to supervisors.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects.
  • Adherence to travel Standard Operating Procedures and consistent expense tracking.
  • Ability to write, edit & proofread written materials for use with project development and presentation.
  • Ability to work with and communicate with a wide range of people--conservation staff, Arizona Project WET/University of Arizona staff, school personnel, students, community volunteers.
  • Ability to analyze available information for the purpose of coordinating efforts, planning, & implementing projects.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Work performed in a general office setting at both AZ Project WET and TNC and at festivals and educational activities in public parks and riparian areas.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment and manage deadlines.
Educational Background: 
Associates Degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • AmeriCorps members must be U.S. Citizens, U.S. National or Legal Permanent Residents
  • Experience coordinating & managing multiple projects.
  • Experience in business writing.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Must possess valid driver license.
  • Criminal History check required and selection for the position is contingent upon review of results of the check.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Ability to work with children (K-12) in an educational setting.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience coordinating and motivating people.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills:  Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Basic understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) a plus.
  • Strong interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy.
Compensation/Benefits: 

This is a full-time position with minimum requirement of 1700 hours of service and training for successful completion with a stipend for the full period of $13,992 paid bi-weekly.  Training will include position specific and professional development training.

Benefits:  Medical insurance; $6,095 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the term of service; childcare coverage, if the member qualifies; student loan forbearance and interest payments, if the member qualifies.
