Context: Builds grassroots power by increasing the number of people connected to nature and committed to creating equitable access to nature for all. Primary responsibility: working with volunteers and staff, this position is responsible for designing and directing volunteer recruitment and training programs that support and enhance Sierra Club local level outdoors programming.
Scope: The Local Outdoors Coordinator works with staff and volunteers to design and implement local strategies and projects that increase opportunities for people to connect with nature to improve their mental and physical health, and ignite their commitment for protecting the planet and each other. The Coordinator identifies and implements processes and procedures to start or grow volunteer managed outings groups in the region that help advance campaign, movement building and equity goals.
- Works with local volunteers and staff to assess 3-5 priority locations in the region to grow or build local outdoors programming. Sets goals and priorities for the cities; identifies needs and implements changes in the recruitment and stewardship of volunteers, partners and participants to effectively engage and train outdoor leaders and participants.
- Develops opportunities and trains volunteers to learn and advance their skills in managing risk, social and economic justice, developing culturally relevant outings, understanding local conservation issues and building community.
- Relays policies, insurance, and risk management information to leaders. Provides guidance to volunteers to help them successfully manage their group and develop their leadership capabilities. Conduct needs assessments, reviews and surveys to evaluate and identify needs, training and resources.
- Supports regional and state level communications. Works with volunteers and staff to develop reports, communications, and advocacy and program materials for volunteers, donors and the general public.
- Helps the Sierra Club be regarded as a regional leader in outdoor engagement for historically and currently marginalized and oppressed communities.
- Works with staff and volunteers to develop a best-in-class program supporting improved resiliency; improved mental, physical, and community health; and conservation through outdoor recreation; and sets up the Sierra Club as a go-to resource for those looking to recharge and reconnect with what is important to them.
- Represents Sierra Club Outdoor Activities to partner organizations and the public by participating in meetings, public speaking, and establishing and maintaining contacts.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

- Experience coordinating and facilitating learning programs for individuals and diverse teams (onsite and virtually) on equity and inclusion, including unconscious bias and comfort in facilitating discussions around topics of race, poverty, justice and equity
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport quickly

- Understanding and/or experience working with populations traditionally under-represented in the outdoors and in environmental organizations, particularly in high stress and trauma populations.
