The Camp Coordinator position assists in the management of the summer camp at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove. S/he will work directly with our partner, Freedom Valley YMCA to operate a 10 week summer day camp that serves 100 children.  

S/he assists the Freedom Valley YMCA camp leaders with all aspects of planning, developing, operating, and managing the summer camp. This position is in charge of all facility related issues such as opening and closing the buildings, monitoring the grounds, maintaining continual communication with our partners regarding site issues, and safety of both the property and campers. S/he will be developing and implementing the daily programming provided to the campers and acts as a liaison between the Freedom Valley YMCA and the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist with management of all aspects of camp programming with Freedom Valley YMCA
  • Assist YMCA in training and supervision of counselors
  • Develop camp programming, create Audubon program schedule for summer, implement programming
  • Interact with YMCA staff to trouble shoot and problem solve
  • Responsible for opening and closing all buildings and issues pertaining to site
  • Purchases, manages and organizes Audubon camp materials
  • Acts as liaison between John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove and Freedom Valley YMCA
  • Assist the Center staff in overall Center responsibilities, as well as perform all duties deemed necessary to further the mission of the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2-3 years’ experience working in or leading summer camp or similar environmental education or outdoor education programs. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Experience working with and managing staff and youth volunteers
  • Able to interact well with children, teens and adults, especially parents
  • Experience developing and leading environmental education curriculum
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy, particularly word-processing, e-mail, and database functions
  • Self-motivated, detailed-oriented with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Interest in local natural history and the outdoor environment
  • Willing to work outdoors in any weather as necessary
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required
