Teach For America-Greater Philadelphia seeks a Senior Managing Director of External Affairs (SMDEA) to lead and manage three of our critical work-streams: Development and Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, and Public Affairs.  In order to continue to build on the momentum of the region, the SMDEA should be comfortable setting a compelling, relationship-centric vision, crafting both long-and short-term strategies, as well as managing a team toward ambitious results. 

You will work closely with the Executive Director, Regional Team, and Regional Board to communicate the brand and story of Teach For America, ensuring we are known as the most impactful organization and network of leaders fueling educational equity for kids across Philadelphia. You will lead our campaign to raise up to $5M annually by 2022 and diversify and grow our donor base through entrepreneurial, game-changing strategies and tactics to accomplish that goal.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Fundraising and Relationship Management (45%)

  • Ensure that all external stakeholders – including donors, prospective donors, other local community leaders and non-profit partners – are assigned a portfolio manager who is collectively responsible for ensuring we build and maintain strong relationships and continue to deepen our partners’ belief in and investment in our work.
  • Own a portfolio of donors and prospects with a willingness and experience “making the ask” of donors and prospects.
  • Identify and prioritize key actions for the Executive Director and Regional Board of Directors to take in engaging with external stakeholders. Manage and support execution of meetings, events and correspondence, etc.
  • Support the Executive Director in managing the Regional Board of Directors fundraising efforts and donor stewardship.
  • Build key relationships to work collaboratively on city-wide initiatives that impact education in Philadelphia.  
  • Support Executive Director and Board engagement with government relationships,  PDE, and other policy makers to influence public funding.

Team Management (25%)

  • Manage a team of three staff members to excel in their roles and support their professional development and growth through providing regular feedback, meeting regularly to track progress-to-goal, and serving as a thought-partner and coach. Develop and maintain stellar team management processes (e.g., check-ins, team meetings, and progress-to-goal tracking).
  • Oversee the strategy and execution work of direct reports as they manage relationships and create engagement plans for their portfolio of donors and prospects.
  • Manage External Affairs team to develop and maintain strong operations (e.g., donor meeting preparation, gift processing, grant management, maintaining information in our CRM, etc.).

External Affairs Strategy (20%)

  • Develop and manage a bold strategy for our external affairs work to ensure our region is effectively partnering with the community in ways that align with our mission and fuel our ability to meet annual and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Work side by side with the Executive Director and External Affairs team members as well as the Regional Board of Directors to pursue ambitious goals and strategies across all three work streams (development & fundraising, marketing & communications and public affairs).
  • Develop and implement a strategy for engaging key policymakers and thought leaders in service of our regional vision.

Collaboration with Regional and National Teams (10%)

  • Participate in the National Final Evaluation process (Selection) for up to six days during the year.
  • Matriculate incoming Greater Philadelphia corps members during 4-5 confirmation windows.
  • Attend large-scale, full-day regional events such as all corps programing and Induction.
  • Attend and participate in bi-monthly Staff Meetings, quarterly All Staff Events, and any additional required staff programming.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 7-10 years of relevant work experience (fundraising, public affairs, nonprofit management) required
  • Proven experience of achieving of achieving a substantial fundraising goal
  • Knowledge of the education and philanthropic landscapes in Philadelphia preferred
  • Creating, sustaining, and managing relationships with major gift donors or high-net worth individuals
  • Prior management experience
  • Exceptional strategic and critical thinking skills. In particular, strong vision-setting for managing a team and strong project planning and progress-to-goal management.

Work demands

  • 45-50 hours per week with increased hours occasionally  
  • Frequent travel across the region
  • Able to attend early morning, evening or weekend meetings and events
