Managing Director, Corps Member Experience

The Managing Director, CM Experience (MD, CME) is responsible for matriculation, onboarding and placement of our incoming corps members (CMs), managing relationships with key network and university partner leaders. The MD, CME will work with key networks and partners to ensure CMs are meeting the needs of school communities. The MD, CME is obsessed with culture: you foster inclusive communities, build connections between people and groups, and build relationships with others. You are motivated to dig in to our corps culture data and drive a culture plan for both incoming and current corps members. You will be a thought partner to corps members, offering a helpful balance of direct feedback and support as necessary. You are a strategic and thoughtful manager who can set and drive the vision for your team as well as do the work side by side with your direct reports when required. The MD, CME will report to the Senior Managing Director, Program.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Matriculation, Onboarding and Hiring of Incoming CMs (30%)

  • Set the vision and oversee execution for the region’s confirmation efforts - the 2 week period when newly accepted corps members are deciding to either accept or decline their offer to join Teach For America – Greater Philadelphia.
  • Ensure all new teachers are assigned to the most strategic grade and content area given their experience, interest, regional school needs and state certification requirements.
  • Liaise with Admissions on all issues related to deferrals, regional reassignments, matriculation extension requests, and other special processes.
  • Set the vision for all hiring events, ensure a positive experience for all attendees (both school partners and CMs) and with the support of your team, execute hiring fairs resulting in as many placements as possible.
  • Secure other hiring opportunities for CMs as needed, so that all CMs are placed by the first day of school.

 External Relationship Building (25%):

  • Cultivate existing relationships and establish new district and charter partnerships to place corps members with an eye toward maximizing impact. Ensure that all incoming teachers (approximately 60 new teachers annually) have teaching positions/placements in alignment with regional vision and placement strategy by the first day of school.
  • Build strong relationships with individual school, district and CMO leaders to monitor progress, align on support, and build a long-term movement. Regularly align on programmatic and corps member efficacy and impact.
  • Managing all external relationships for certification purposes including: university partner representatives that are responsible for certification and the university admissions process, state departments of certification and licensure and school and district personnel that are responsible for compliance and certification.
  • Ensure strategic management of school placement agreements (PSAs) and full collection of school fees.

 Establish and Maintain a Robust Corps Culture (20%)

  • Develop a compelling vision for corps culture and an arc of CM experiences aligned with TFA’s strategic direction, priorities and breakthrough results, and with the vision and theory of action of the Program Team.
  • Establish systems and protocols to track progress toward goals, with a specific focus on impact on breakthrough results, specifically CALI, CSI, NPS, etc.
  • Continuously build your expertise in adult learning, excellence culture and community building, optimal learning experiences, and leadership development so that your efforts are informed by best practices, research and are creative and innovative.

 Corps Member Support (10%)

  • Develop a support structure to assist corps members in their transition to classroom teaching
  • Establish systems to support corps members in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Culturally, Responsive Teaching related to self and transition to leadership

 Management (10%):

  • Coach and manage our Sr. Associate, Placement and Partnerships and Associate, Operations & Events

 Collaboration with regional and national teams (5%)

  • Participate in the National Final Evaluation process (Selection) for up to six days during the year
  • Matriculate incoming Greater Philadelphia corps members during 4-5 confirmation windows
  • Attend large-scale, full-day regional events such as all corps programing and Induction
  • Attend and participate in bi-monthly Stand-Up Meetings, quarterly All Staff Events, and any additional required staff programming
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6+ years of work experience preferred
  • Deep commitment to diversity equity and inclusiveness, educational equity, and experience successfully managing/working across lines of difference
  • Experience managing several projects at once and getting strong results in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent management experience and record of leading teams to results
  • Experience influencing others toward outcomes through sophisticated relationship management
  • Experience in social work and guidance is a plus, but not required
  • Understanding or familiarity with Pennsylvania Teacher Certification is plus,  but not required
  • Preferred bilingual Spanish
  • Ability to build a culture of team and community

Work demands

  • 45-50 hours per week with increased hours occasionally 
  • Frequent travel to school sites across the region
  • Able to attend evening or weekend events
  • Able to travel outside of Philadelphia 1-2 times per year
