Teach For America – Greater Philadelphia seeks a Director of Teacher Support and Development (D,TSD) to support rising alumni and alumni teachers’ professional development, retention, and connection to one another and teacher networks across the Greater Philadelphia region. The D,TSD will focus her/his time on the ~450 Teach For America teachers – corps members and alumni - in the region to ensure these educators are better prepared, better developed, and better connected to maximize their effectiveness and support for one another and their impact on students. The D,TSD will report directly to the Managing Director, Alumni Affairs and will work closely with our Program team which onboards and coaches new Teach For America teachers.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Alumni Teacher Support and Development: Leading Classrooms Teacher Fellowship (30%)

  • Design and facilitate a Teacher Leader Fellowship for 8-12 teachers (focused on 3rd-5thyear teachers) with the goals of building participants’ ability to create an anti-oppressive and liberatory vision for their classroom, aligning their classroom actions to that vision, and building a coalition among participants to support them in their work
  • Fellowship responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Designing and executing a year-long scope and sequence aligned to the fellowship goals
    • Managing two Senior Fellows who, in collaboration with the D,TSD, design and facilitate fellowship experiences
    • Building and/or strengthening relationships and partnerships with external partners to deliver session content aligned to the fellowship goals
    • Providing individual coaching for fellows in between fellowship sessions, in alignment with individual teachers’ emerging classroom visions
    • Engage past participants of the program in responsive support and development

Alumni Teacher Support and Development: On-Demand Programming  (25%)

  • Collect and analyze alumni survey data and informal feedback to create responsive, on-demand programming (ie. book clubs, networking events, mentorships, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director, Alumni Affairs to design and execute Schools to Learn From Program, including, but not limited to: outreach to potential host schools, initial school visits, planning calls, logistics support, and agenda design
  • Design and execute a programming series, including but not limited to: designing and executing 3-4 sessions in a 6-week period, inviting external partners to present at sessions, conducting outreach to attract a diverse group of participants and providing logistical support.
  • Recruit alumni participants for on-demand programming with attention to engaging alumni who represent the diversity of our larger alumni community

Alumni Teacher Network Engagement (25%)

  • Conduct regular, proactive outreach to a diverse group of alumni and meet individually, or in groups, to understand their development interests and goals as well as how they could support other alumni and/or corps member teachers
  • Foster connection between alumni, proactively and reactively. This may include supporting alumni who are looking for new positions, connecting teachers to a mentor, introducing alumni with similar goals & interests, and more
  • Leverage the alumni network to provide referrals and connections for job-seeking rising alumni and alumni
  • Collaborate with the Alumni Team to develop and execute a strategy for the Alumni Survey including outreach, data tracking, and incentives programs
  • Create large and small opportunities for the alumni community to get to know one another and support the work they are doing through regular networking events, teacher appreciation week activities and designing programming and experiences for our annual education summit focused on building a community of support among teachers

Corps Member Teacher Retention and Development (10%)

  • Conduct regular, proactive outreach to a diverse group of corps members and meet individually, or in groups, to understand their development interests and goals and to build interest in alumni network engagement
  • Design and execute a “Continuing Your Impact” program focused on supporting rising alumni as they reflect on their corps experience and consider their options after the corps. This may include an alumni panel, resume/interview workshop, etc.
  • Plan and execute Alumni Induction in collaboration with Program Team, corps members, and alumni teachers which celebrates corps members’ two years of service in the classroom and welcomes them to alumni movement

Data Input and Analysis (5%)

  • Utilize data management systems (Salesforce platform TFACT, Google Drive) to accurately report and track progress towards goals
  • Analyze existing and newly gathered data to determine a responsive strategy for programming development and relationship building

Collaboration with regional and national teams (5%)

  • Participate in the national final evaluation process (Selection) for up to six days during the year
  • Matriculate incoming Greater Philadelphia corps members during 4-5 confirmation windows
  • Attend large-scale, full-day regional events such as Philly Pham professional development days and Induction for new teachers
  • Attend and participate in weekly Alumni Team Meetings, bi-monthly, region-wide Stand-Up Meetings, quarterly All Staff Events, and any additional required staff programming
  • Partner with Greater Philadelphia functional teams as needed to provide information about alumni for reports, proposals, speeches, etc.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required, Masters in Education preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of teaching experience preferred, prior coaching experience required
  • School leadership experience preferred but not required
  • Experience and record of results in teacher development and programming development
  • Experience and record of results in developing strong partnerships to achieve outcomes
  • Teach For America alum preferred but not required
  • Philadelphia native or long-time resident preferred but not required

Work Demands​

  • 45-50 hours per week with increased hours occasionally
  • Some weekend and evening work required
  • Some local travel to in-person meetings required
