The Black/African American Outreach Specialist is primarily responsible for implementing common program plan programs in the Black/African American community to raise awareness, provide Alzheimer’s/dementia education and support to individuals living with dementia, and the general public. This position also recruits, trains, stewards and manages volunteers to increase program delivery and support services throughout the chapter/region. This full time position is based in the Chapter headquarters in Philadelphia, PA and reports to the Associate Director Diversity & Inclusion. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Expand services throughout the region, especially in underserved areas, including implementation of outreach, awareness, common program plan programs, services and educational opportunities
  • Leverage national partnerships like AKA and faith communities, as well as Black history month and other opportunities to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s in Black/African American communities
  • Work within the parameters of program grants to deliver the goals and objectives that are promised to funders and that also serve people with dementia and their family and professional care partners
  • Establish a baseline for Diversity and Inclusion metrics to create goals around outreach strategies
  • Act as collection point across service area for grant-related statistics and report these and grant activities to chapter management and funders as specified in grant contracts
  • Recruit, orient, train and manage volunteers for the following core service and chapter functions: Support Groups; Speakers Bureau; multicultural and rural outreach; development projects/special events
  • Act as chapter liaison on health/community based task forces related to outreach in Black/African American communities, including any participation required by home office on national task forces 
  • Provide follow up on Helpline inquiries as indicated 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in social work, gerontology, or public health or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years of experience working in non-profit sector supporting public health issues affecting minority populations. 
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Prior experience managing volunteers highly preferred 
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative
  • Ability to analyze information and make timely appropriate decisions
  • An absolute commitment to confidentiality
  • Proficient in all Microsoft office platforms and data entry 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable automobile and appropriate insurance 
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines 
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
