To develop and deliver dynamic, high quality environmental interpretation and education, outdoor recreation, conservation science and advocacy programs.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Using New York State Standards as a guideline, enhance current curriculum and assist with implementing new curriculum. These lessons will include PowerPoint, worksheets and hands-on lab activities. 
  • Schedule, design and teach education programs both in the classroom, at the sanctuary and in afterschool settings. 
  • Work with Education Manager to develop and implement education programs that advance the understanding and conservation of birds, other wildlife and their habitats and engage people of diverse backgrounds along the Atlantic Flyway. 
  • Assist in managing the volunteer calendar, volunteer trainings, and staffing all group volunteer days. 
  • Attend and contribute to education and staff meetings, network with other educators and other staff in within Audubon.
  • Teach on-site, off-site and special event programs on a regular basis as dictated by program offerings, to include handling and transporting materials and live animals for education programs to audiences of all ages throughout Long Island. Reliable transportation a must. 
  • During summer months (late June-August) be able to work as a full-time seasonal counselor Monday-Thursday (8am-4pm). Lead daily activities and create and implement camp curriculum for children 6-14 years old.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree with experience in a conservation education setting including teaching, management experience and curriculum development, or a similar combination of education and experience, required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Proven abilities in designing, writing and evaluating environmental education curricula, lesson plans and activities. 
  • Proven skills teaching in formal and informal settings to a variety of audiences; desire to connect children of all ages to nature a must.
  •  Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently in a fast-paced environment, all while exercising discretion and personal judgment. 
  • A self-starter, who takes initiative and demonstrates dedication; a problem-solver who works to see projects through to completion. 
  • Must be people oriented, have a team-focused attitude, and the ability to professionally represent Audubon to the public. 
  • Commitment to conservation and the Audubon mission. 
  • Must be available for occasional weekend or evening programs. 
  • Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule and have reliable transportation to travel to and from schools with teaching materials. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy, particularly word-processing, e-mail, and database functions required. Proficient in Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • The desire to educate diverse audiences, with an emphasis on young people, about the natural world and conservation.
