The Director of Strategic Partnerships plays a key role in the development and implementation of one or more strategies to achieve TNC Canada’s goals through strategic engagement with governments, multilateral agencies, and the corporate sector.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Director of Strategic Partnerships works with an interdisciplinary team to serve as a subject matter expert and advisor on complex and strategic issues. S/he leads TNC Canada’s strategic engagement of government and corporate sectors to advance organization-wide objectives through holistic relationships that advance conservation, philanthropy, and external communications objectives. S/he supports conservation and fundraising programs by leveraging strategic partnerships for funding and innovative financing models, and supports the development and implementation of external communications for priority programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Works in close collaboration with conservation, fundraising, and communications teams, to advance the following strategies in support of TNC Canada’s overall goals:

 Strategic Engagement

  • Leads the development of TNC Canada’s overall government relations strategy, working closely with and supporting regional staff to ensure relationships with key national, provincial and territorial government officials are built and coordinated in an effort to influence government policy and funding. Lead on relationships and strategy implementation of federal government, and regionally where needed.
  • Fosters specific public/private/NGO initiatives and partnerships in support of broader organizational goals and represent TNC Canada on those strategic partnerships where appropriate.
  • Leads the development and management of strategic partnerships (complex and multi-pronged) with governments and companies that deliver on conservation and fundraising objectives and align with our strategic focus.
  • Leads a cross-functional corporate engagement committee at TNC Canada that assesses our proposed corporate engagements for risk and opportunity and that makes recommendations on initiatives to pursue; lead our efforts with the RAC and align and integrate with the Conservancy’s corporate engagement efforts.
  • Acts as the point person for Canadian-related business impact internationally.

Securing funding

  • Supports the philanthropy team to lead the development of strategic, multi-faceted partnerships that deliver transformative funding and conservation impact.
  • Leads the effort to secure funding from government partners. Identify and leverage public funding opportunities for our work domestically and internationally, working with our fundraising team and international programs as opportunities arise.
  • Supports the fundraising team in the cultivation and solicitation of philanthropy opportunities as they relate to strategic partnerships and initiatives.

External Communications

  • Supports TNC Canada’s communications objectives by leveraging strategic partnerships, working closely with conservation programs and marketing, to ensure we have a consistent set of key messages and position statements for our priority programs that resonate with government and corporate audiences.
  • Serves as a key spokesperson for TNC Canada for government and corporate audiences, and work with conservation staff and the Marketing team to develop strategies and protocol for responding to media requests.
  • May supervise administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development;
  • Financial responsibility including working with the Executive Director with budget preparation and management;
  • Applies a diversified knowledge of practices to support TNC Canada’s strategies; and
  • Acts independently within broad program goals.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy, management or other relevant field and 5 years of government relations or corporate sector experience, or equivalent combination education/experience;
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluency in English;
  • Analytical and project management experience. Demonstrated experience in successfully developing and implementing complex projects in an unstructured environment;
  • Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals; and
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated;
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred;
  • Master’s degree appreciated;
  • Experience presenting to and communicating with management-level individuals within the corporate sector.  Excellent presentation skills;
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary groups, using influence and interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with governments, corporations, partners, donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff; and
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
