Sports and Youth Director

Under the direction of branch management and in accordance with the goals of the YMCA, the Sports and Youth Director is responsible for the development, administration, supervision, and evaluation of youth and sports programming.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop, staff, implement, supervise, and evaluate the YMCA’s youth and adult sports programming, including gym schedule, youth and adult sports clinics, camps and leagues for all sports offered, Climbing Wall, and sport wall. Plan special events such as 3 on 3 Basketball tournament, etc.
  • Develop, staff, implement, supervise and evaluate the YMCA’s Activity Center programming and teen initiatives such as Youth and Government, free 6th Grade membership. At the core of these initiatives are programs focusing on education, leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Enlist youth into effective volunteer opportunities to further develop their service ethic.
  • Hires, Trains, and supervises staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Facilitates communication and provides leadership; models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Establish new program activities and expand programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develop and maintain an annual activities planning calendar for all areas under supervision. Effectively communicate the activities and schedules with other departments, YMCA staff, and participants.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Coordinate use of facilities for program activities and events. Work cooperatively with the Facilities Director and staff in developing and implementing plans for equipment maintenance and repair to ensure a clean, attractive facility.
  • Coordinate with the Communications and Marketing department for the publicity of programs and events. Develop program brochures and handouts to distribute to the identified target market(s).
  • Assist in the YMCA Annual Campaign and special events.
  • Respond to member and community inquiries and complaints within 24 hours.
  • Develop an annual budget with management that accurately reflects income and expenses. Manage the department within budgeted guidelines.
  • Assume a fair share of administrative responsibilities including duty weekends and night supervision.
  • Participate in Association initiatives, activities, and special events as requested by supervisor including Healthy Kids Day, Fit ‘n’ Fun’ Fest, and other special events.
  • Prepare regular program reports and conduct program satisfaction surveys each season.
  • Exemplify the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility when dealing with YMCA staff, members, and community members; ensure a high level of service & commitment to changing lives.
  • Provide teens with a secondary support system, positive role models, a safe and caring environment and a variety of structured activities.
  • This job description may not be all-inclusive and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by the CEO. Staff are expected to perform all other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or CEO.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience working with youth & teens preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • The incumbent must be able to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, lay leaders, YMCA members, and the general public.
  • This position requires strong interpersonal skills, hiring/training/supervising, evaluating performance.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

Required Certifications

  • The following training courses are required before beginning work: Child Abuse Prevention; Bloodborne Pathogens; Slips, Trips, and Falls.
  • Certifications required prior to being hired: New Staff Orientation.
  • Certifications required within 90 days of hire: CPR/AED, and First Aid.
Compensation/Benefits: 

$36,274.00 - $41,734.00
