POSITION SUMMARY

The National Field Organizer position is a full-time position at MediaJustice.  This National Field Organizer leads and executes national campaigns to resist and prohibit the use of high-tech surveillance and police tools used to criminalize and incarcerate marginalized communities.  Primary responsibilities include developing visionary campaign strategies, coordinating related rapid response efforts, cultivating and developing the leadership of communities most impacted by technological discrimination/harm, and building relevant campaign-based political education for our MediaJustice community. 

A strong candidate for this position will have at least 4-5 years of organizing experience on national or state-based campaigns.  This person should be a self starter, proactive, and can drive a project to completion from start to finish.  This candidate should have a proven track record of developing and leading campaigns that engage a diverse audience in online and offline tactics. This person should have excellent relationship-building skills and should have experience cultivating leaders.  This person should have excellent writing skills and should be a creative problem solver. This person should be comfortable setting ambitious goals and should be comfortable working independently in a remote organization.

MediaJustice (formerly the Center for Media Justice) is a national media justice organizing and training collaborative led by and for underrepresented communities, and home to our signature project, the MediaJustice Network.  For over 10 years, MediaJustice has boldly advanced communication rights, access, and power for communities harmed by persistent dehumanization, discrimination and disadvantage. The National Field Organizer is supervised by the Campaign Strategies Director, and is a key member of the MJ’s Campaigns Team, which includes 2 additional Field Organizers and one part-time fellow. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Primary Job Responsibilities

Campaign and Advocacy Activities 

  • Implement or drive campaign-based tactics & events (ie; delegations, direct and online actions, etc)
  • Organize and lead campaign-specific workshops on surveillance issues, e-carceration, and high tech policing tools 
  • Engage policymakers, corporate decision-makers, national organizations, and local grassroots groups 
  • Represent MediaJustice in coalition spaces by effectively communicating our campaign issues and demands, as well as our organizational values and mission 

 Organizational

  • Attends internal organizational meetings and is an active participant in organizational activities and conversations 
  • Ability to collaborate across teams to move campaign work forward
  • Participates in regular supervision meetings with Campaign Strategies Director 
  • Utilizes Asana for project management, completes timesheets, and expense reports
  • Completes all other assignments as required by the Director
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications 

Required Skills, Experience, and Abilities

  • 4-5 years of experience in policy, grassroots organizing, or other advocacy work
  • Experience leading state or national campaigns related to mass incarceration, policing, surveillance
  • Must have excellent relationship building-skills with experience cultivating and developing the leadership of young people and/or people of color 
  • Demonstrated experience working in regional or national alliances, coalitions, or networks
  • Experience in facilitation, capacity building, and curriculum development
  • Excellent writing and facilitation skills.  Experience designing and implementing workshops, including developing curriculum and overall excellent project management skills 
  • Self-motivated, professional, deadline-driven, well-organized, able to work independently, and in a fast-paced environment, within a team of professionals
  • Ability to effectively represent communities of color, and other underrepresented groups in public debates on media rights, access, and representation
  • Committed to a racial justice vision and organizations that move it forward

Preferred Skills & Experience 

  • Experience engaging in direct action and public protest and familiarity with practices that enhance digital safety (i.e. encrypted messaging, 2-factor authentication, virtual private networks) 
  • Knowledge of media rights, access, or representation issues
  • Must be comfortable using technology, with basic skills in word processing
  • Experience working remotely as part of a dispersed staff team
  • Knowledge of allied organizations such as Mijente and Color of Change, as well as a familiarity with MediaJustice Network members such as SONG, Witness, and Movement Alliance Project
Compensation/Benefits: 

The Position

The Field Organizer is a 40 hour/week, full-time exempt position, and reports to the Campaign Strategies Director. it requires ability to travel regularly (at least once a month once it is safe to do so); and work nights and weekends as needed.

For the Field Organizer position the salary is $70-75k DOE. We also offer benefits and leave, including but not limited to:

  • Medical, Vision and Dental for $30/month, plus 50% coverage for family premiums. 
  • $200/month reimbursement available for remote work or coworking costs
  • $60/month reimbursement for cell phone
  • $150/month for wellness/stress prevention
  • $1500/annually for professional development
  • FSA, and 401K with employer matching
  • Annual Leave: 3 weeks vacation; 12 days of sick time, 2 days of personal time, 13 paid holidays; as well as at least 5-7 extra days in addition to existing holidays during the winter.
