Context: The My Generation campaign is focused on equitably moving California to 100% clean energy and electrifying the economy. A central part of this campaign is decarbonizing the buildings sector by electrifying all gas appliances and powering them with clean energy. The Senior Campaign Representative will plan, convene, coordinate, and implement strategies and activities to develop local leadership on building electrification in California with a priority focus on local and sub-regional leadership.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the My Generation campaign building electrification strategies and activities that relate to developing city, county, municipal utility, and/or CCA leadership. In consultation with volunteers, partners, and staff, the Senior Campaign Representative coordinates and guides the team of staff and volunteers, ensuring successful implementation of campaign goals, and robust collaboration across teams, campaigns, and Chapters with vested interest in decarbonizing the buildings sector. Produces educational materials, presentations and reports, does research, testifies, lobbies and develops subject matter expertise. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media and other organizations. Takes appropriate action to ensure that program goals and objectives are met.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborates with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapters, Communications Department, Organizing and On-line Organizing capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, volunteer leadership, other national campaigns and key stakeholders to develop and implement a strategic campaign plan that delivers new local leadership on building electrification that is centered in energy equity and a just transition.
  • In collaboration with the team and external partners, develops campaign policy positions and advocates before local, regional, and state decision-makers.  Cultivates productive relationships with key policy-makers and their staff.
  • Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Provides training and motivation to staff and volunteers. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  • Supports media outreach activities related to the campaign/program.  As needed, serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer and partner organization media exposure.
  • Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion.  Works to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  • Develops and engages new strategic partnerships including health, low-income, labor, environmental justice, housing, and consumer advocacy groups.
  • Writes, edits, and reviews educational, training, and advocacy materials.
  • Provides analysis and support for campaign budget and quarterly forecasts.
  • As needed, participates in donor and foundation solicitation and cultivation, including meeting with funders and preparation of funder presentation, proposals, and reports.
  • Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies.
  • Introduces and develops creative ideas and new approaches for team consideration.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines and during peak activity periods.
  • 3-5 years experience as a campaigner or organizer in an environmental, health, economic justice or related advocacy campaign. Or, relevant experience in city or county planning. Experience supporting a city, regional, or state level campaign or project, including developing strategy, organizing, lobbying, media relations, outreach, and collaboration with allied organizations.
  • Interest in and knowledge of California energy policy and regulatory landscape. Knowledge of city and county planning processes a plus.
  • Interest in and knowledge of clean energy industry and technology.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. 
  • Experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers, community members, and partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to incorporating principles of justice, equity and inclusion into campaign process and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to support or lead a project or campaign with a high level of self-motivation, strategic thinking, organizational skills, attention to detail, and reliability.
