The Network Education Coordinator is part of a team developing the leadership and power of a national network focused on media and digital justice in Black, Brown and working class communities. The coordinator will be responsible for creating curricula, activities, and events which establish a shared base of knowledge and analysis about the issues of our day. Responsibilities include developing skills on key strategic communications, cultural organizing, digital strategy and security, and other media justice issues. Traditionally, this position requires frequent travel (20%) and can be remote or based in our Oakland, CA, offices. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, all of our staff and programs will remain remote. The Network Education Coordinator is a full-time (100% FTE) position at MediaJustice (MJ). 

The Network Education Coordinator is supervised by the Network Strategies Director.

Areas of Responsibility: 

 Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Alignment to MJ’s Mission: Understand and commit to advancing MJs campaign work, mission, and vision. 

  • Curriculum Development: Create training curricula for a wide audience—including youth, community organizers, policy advocates, artists, and cultural workers—which accommodates different learning styles and needs. Incorporate best practices and cutting-edge approaches rooted in a popular education methodology and an understanding of power relationships in groups.

  • Facilitation: Manage small and large groups with a relationship-based inclination.

  • Project Coordination: Help the Network team manage and grow the Media Justice Learning Community with the development, implementation and assessment of the MediaJustice Leadership Institute, a training program for the next generation of leaders in our MediaJustice Network.

  • Event Management: Work with the Events Manager to coordinate the logistics for our educational activities.

Skills/Experience: 

Demonstrated Experience:

  • Training and developing leaders through virtual or in-person workshops and events.

  • Organizing and leading educational programs, presenting at conferences, and conducting online classes.

  • Curriculum development, publishing, and evaluation.

  • Popular education and facilitation.

  • Working in social justice movements and with an understanding of cross-issue organizing.

  • Effectively representing communities of color and other underrepresented groups in public debates on media rights, access, and representation.

  • Working in alliances, coalitions, or networks.

  • Working with organizations committed to racial justice.

 

Qualities:

  • Collaborative: Ability to work well with others to bring Network members into educational activities in a meaningful way (co-creating curriculum, co-facilitation, creating space for collaboration, etc.).

  • Politically grounded: Ability to analyze sophisticated racial, economic, and gender justice issues with an understanding of how media justice intersects with other social justice movements.

  • Creative: Solution-oriented, but with a sense of humor.

  • Dedicated: Committed to a racial justice vision and organizations that move it forward.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with digital security

  • Knowledge of the media and technology landscape (especially as it relates to surveillance).

  • Video/Film, Radio production

  • Excellent writing and public speaking

  • Community organizing

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus

Compensation/Benefits: 

The Field Organizer is a 40 hour/week, full-time exempt position, and reports to the Campaign Strategies Director. Salary is between $50K - $60K DOE with full medical, dental and vision benefits, optional 401(k), a substantial vacation package, and a quarterly personal wellness stipend.
