Donor Communications and Stewardship Manager

Context: Develops, designs, and implements a broad range of communications and marketing materials, which help to engage, cultivate and steward major donors, planned giving prospects, membership prospects and existing members/donors of the Sierra Club and Sierra Club Foundation. 

Scope: The Manager is responsible for managing projects that help translate key fundraising priorities of the Sierra Club into compelling publications, events, and other marketing vehicles. Serves as a principal liaison for Advancement with the Sierra Club’s media and communications team as well as the Sierra Club Foundation. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead the development of compelling stewardship materials and communications, including but not limited to annual reports, impact reports, email updates, and digital media.
  • Oversees the development and production of case-building publications, brochures, newsletters, mailings targeted for major donors, event invitations, web sites, presentations, promotional videos, and other communications vehicles, and serves as the principal editor as well as the owner of brand and graphic standards for the Office of Advancement.
  • Works with Major Gifts, Membership/Direct Marketing, Business Partnerships, and Planned Giving team members, relevant Programs/Conservation campaign staff leaders, and other key stakeholders on delivering donor cultivation and stewardship materials for events.
  • Develops content for donor programs and activities.  Keeps current on Club programs and environmental issues to maintain relevance and appropriateness of programs content.
  • Participates in the development of communication plans for Club programs in conjunction with Senior Advancement and Programs staff, and assists in the production of evolving multimedia communications for Club campaigns, working with colleagues across the organization to develop, edit, revise and revamp power points, videos, brochures, prospectus materials, online donor surveys and other materials as needed.
  • Serves as departmental liaison to key organization-wide communications-related initiatives such as national communications, the CONNECT team and the organization’s overall marketing and branding initiatives, where appropriate.
  • Supervises team of content producers and provides mentorship, training and development, prepares annual evaluations and performance plans, and makes recommendations to help set priorities, maintain strategic project management and balance team and departmental need, where appropriate. .
  • Performs liaison function with Senior Communications and Digital Strategies teams to integrate or align Advancement messaging in Sierra Club media, and integrates key organizational messaging in donor relations activities and materials. 
  • Assists the Deputy Chief Advancement Officer, Major Gifts in overall strategic communications, cultivation and stewardship plans for major donors.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
BA degree in Marketing, Communication or related field or the equivalent combination of experience and education
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4-6 years’ experience in communications and marketing within a non-profit or philanthropic work environment preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and tools of fundraising
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly around effective program storytelling and communicating impact
  • Ability to conceptualize cohesive sophisticated design themes for publications including Annual Reports, program marketing pieces, donor newsletters, etc.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Experience with in-house design work and brand consistency
  • Familiarity with print design and publishing practices a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple important priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of effective, high touch contact for donor, volunteer and staff constituencies, and an unwavering customer service orientation
  • Ability to work effectively across organizations, with diverse groups of people, and across departments within the Sierra Club to build effective teams
  • Skill in using discretion, tact and diplomacy in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters

This is a category 5 exempt position.
