Scope:  Works to ensure the Sierra Club builds grassroots power so that the organization is successful in advancing conservation and movement building outcomes through distributed organizing, including:

  • Distributed Organizing: Designing, implementing and supporting Sierra Club’s distributed organizing strategies, in partnership with other staff, volunteers and teams;
  • Movement Building: Developing and implementing distributed organizing strategies that center movement building, equity, inclusion and justice;
  • National liaison and coordination with identified partners, departments, campaigns, programs and initiatives, including managing national distributed organizing staff.
  • Support and training: Provide support and training for Sierra Club staff and volunteers in distributed organizing.   

Context:  Provides leadership and support for Program Department staff and volunteers in ensuring excellence in our distributed organizing that centers movement building, justice and equity work. Supports the needs of distributed organizing staff and assists staff and volunteers with support and training in developing distributed organizing practices. Partner with Program Department leadership, Organizing Department leadership and campaign directors to align distributed organizing strategy. Coordinate with Digital Strategies Department to ensure integration between our online and on-the-ground organizing work in Distributed Organizing. Coordinates with the Data team to assess needs and indicators for distributed organizing. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • DISTRIBUTED ORGANIZING – Design, implement and support Sierra Club’s distributed organizing strategies in partnership with our Digital Strategies; Co-lead a process to bring alignment and clarity to the Sierra Club’s distributed organizing work; Support existing staff and volunteers engaged in distributed field organizing and ensure we are providing the training, support, and mentoring for staff and volunteers on the implementation and practices to carry out this work successfully.
  • MOVEMENT BUILDING, EQUITY AND JUSTICE: As we ensure movement building, equity, inclusion and justice are at the core of our work, help to run strategic effective distributed campaigns while building and defining our role in the broader movement. Work to ensure our distributed organizing work creates real improvements in people’s lives, achieves campaign and policy victories, builds long term power and is rooted in our movement building, equity and justice values. This position would build on the work that is already happening through Movement Building, Clean Energy for All, Transformational Organizing, and Justice and Equity plans and projects. Ensure that distributed organizing work is contributing to the larger social justice movement, in partnership with other organizations. Work with Organizing Department Leadership to align distributed organizing work with more community based organizing and transformational organizing.
  • TEAM MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT - Co-lead Distributed Organizing core team with Digital Strategies partner. Support the Distributed Organizing team and the cross-department community of learning. Serve on the Organizing Support team.
  • COORDINATION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT – This position would serve as a leader and project manager to engage staff and stakeholders across multiple teams, campaigns and department in coordinated distributed organizing work.
  • STAFF MANAGEMENT - Hires, evaluates, coaches, trains and manages 1-3 national Organizing staff.
  • RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WITH STRATEGIC PARTNERS - Promotes and participates in collaborations with other national organizations.
  • TRAINING – This position would design and deliver trainings and support for staff and volunteers in the Program Department on Distributed Organizing.
  • MOVEMENT TECHNOLOGY AND DATA – Identify movement tech and data needs for distributed organizing. Work in partnership with Digital Strategies, the Conservation Data Team and others to meet those needs.
  • DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE - Acts as a liaison between the Program Department and national volunteer leaders, national campaigns, various Sierra Club Departments, and programs and with national coalition partners. Communicate about distributed organizing work with relevant chapters and volunteer entities
  • MISCELLANEOUS - Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong visionary leadership skills, able to clearly communicate broad vision, goals, and steps to achieving those goals.
  • 5-7 years of experience in the environmental movement or social justice advocacy including organizing campaigns, working with volunteers, creating public demand for a policy, movement building, holding the decision makers accountable, and taking delivery on campaign goals.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to develop, train and support employees, especially field organizers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing equity, inclusion and justice.
  • Expertise in developing distributed organizing strategies and integration of online and on the ground organizing
  • Experience organizing with frontline communities and partnering with social justice and environmental justice organizations
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, to provide guidance and leadership to colleagues, excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public, staff, volunteers and government officials.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
