Travel: PCV has office space in downtown Oakland where teams coordinate to intentionally meet in person in the Oakland office. [1] Additionally, travel is required (10%) to attend conferences and to meet with local funders.

We are seeking a Director of Development to lead Pacific Community Venture’s ’s visibility and revenue to new levels. We support our clients through an integrated business model that not only provides affordable funding solutions but supports their financial wellbeing through pre- and post-engagement volunteer mentoring. Our commitment to a culture of innovation is punctuated by the launch of our Good Jobs Innovation Lab – designed to surface innovations to support our programs, and those of many CDFIs in optimizing impact in underestimated communities. Key audiences for our work include small business owners across America, volunteer business experts; corporate partners; leading foundations and impact investors; other CDFIs; and policymakers at the state and local level.

Changing market conditions have made the roles of social impact investors and partners even more critical in order to allow us to keep capital affordable for our clients, provide high quality and culturally competent mentorship, build in translation services, and deeply partner to build power and share resources with community partners closest to their entrepreneurs. We are looking for an individual who can continue to build on this momentum while bringing the strategy and rigor to ensure a sustainable trajectory for our new strategy long-term. Position Overview:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Development will be responsible for oversight of all development, marketing, and communication activities with the goal of increasing visibility of and support for the organization, its programmatic work, and its research and advocacy agenda. The Director will work closely with the senior leadership team to inform them about philanthropic revenue trends and engage them in targeted fundraising activities and public relations opportunities, with some exposure to the Board from time to time. This position will also work closely on the intersection between program fundraising and finance, preparing budgets and forecasts. In addition, he/she/they will partner with lending and program divisions to amplify the success of PCV clients and publicize the impact of our affordable loans, small business advising, and Good Jobs Innovation Lab.
Development Leadership
- Partner with organization leadership to develop annual fundraising plans, revenue budgets, and forecasts while also creating strategies for multi-year revenue growth. Plans should address activities across the year and include strategies for targeted and general identification, acquisition, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Prepare quarterly presentations and reports to the board of directors and agency leadership to track progress. Develop and document processes and practices in partnership with the Finance department to ensure alignment across teams.
- Identify key external stakeholders and develop strategies for engaging and soliciting them in partnership with key agency leaders.
- Develop a pipeline of institutional funders while building a major gifts program to engage individual contributors; work to engage and cultivate both in partnership with key program and executive staff at PCV.
- Collaborate closely with program and finance staff to develop general and issue-specific program proposals, reports, and related budgets and expense reports.
- Oversee the annual development calendar to ensure timeliness of grant proposals, progress reports, and other compliance requirements for funders.
- Record all activities in the agency (Salesforce) CRM database, working with the Development Associate. Develop new policies and practices as needed for ongoing data integrity.
Communication Leadership:
- Partner with agency leadership to further refine the agency’s case for support and brand guidelines and monitor their application across online and print collateral.
- Further develop agency talking points ensuring that PCV continues to build trust in the communities we serve via robust and authentic storytelling. Partner with the Communication Manager and Associate to build the agency's ability to tell authentic storytelling across multiple integrated channels.
- Provide regular reporting to agency leadership on reach, impressions, and impact of communications campaigns.
- Help position PCV as a leader in equitable capital by building relationships with media outlets and pitching powerful stories. Ensure equity-minded storytelling that uplifts local entrepreneurs and adheres to inclusion, access, and community-centric best practices.
- Oversee the annual communications and marketing calendar, content governance, in partnership with the Communications Manager and Associate. Achieve regular, timely dissemination of stories, impact results, newsletters, reports, and other items designed to raise awareness of PCV’s impact
Corporate and Foundation Relations:
- Create, assign, and support organizational leadership to build deep relationships within assigned funder portfolios. Carry a portfolio of key supporters, coordinated across team members, including those managed by the Business Advising team’s Associate Director of Corporate and Community Partnerships.
- Oversee the management of the annual calendar of applications for key public and private grants from corporations, foundations, and public partners. Develop a prospecting process to regularly identify new prospective funders and create engagement plans.
- Build sponsorship programs to support key events and initiatives and partner with agency leadership and board members to engage and solicit past and prospective sponsorship partners.
Staff Management:
- Manage a Communications Manager, Communications Associate, and Development Associate.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

- Eight (8) years of increasing responsibility in Fundraising and Communications roles in the nonprofit sector. CFRE, CAP, or other fundraising certification is desired.
- At least five (5) years’ professional experience in leadership roles in development, marketing & communications, or sales, managing 2 or more direct reports.
- Preferred Experience: at least 2+ years working at a social justice nonprofit with a focus on economic justice and anti-racism. Direct experience with a Community Development Financial Institution is highly desirable (but not required).
- Minimum Education: BA or BS in Marketing, Communications, or another related field.
- Successful or proven track record of managing revenue budgets, staff supervision, and closing 6-figure foundation or corporate gifts.
- A talent for big-picture thinking and managing all of the moving parts of a cross-functional marketing, communications, and development group at a growing organization.
- Proven experience building strategic fundraising plans for growth including corporate partnerships, foundation grants, major gifts, and annual fund. Track record of taking foundation relationships through the full cycle from prospect to successful proposal
- Solid understanding of how to forecast and track development revenue, restricted gifts, and experience in private and public grants management.
- Communications principles: brand management, equitable storytelling, public relations, and creating persuasive materials to drive investment.
- Excellent writing and communications skills and demonstrated experience working with senior leaders and Subject Matter Experts to amplify their thought leadership.
- Commitment to and embodiment of anti-racist organizational culture.
- Software: Fluency with CRM databases required, Salesforce experience preferred. Familiarity with data visualization tools including Tableau is a major plus.
- Fast learner, who demonstrates humility, openness, transparency, and empathy as consistent with PCV values.
- Bilingual skills (especially in Spanish) highly desirable
Location/Travel
This is a hybrid/remote position based at our headquarters in Oakland, CA. The role may involve occasional visits with funders, small business owners, and community partners around our key geographies. This role will also require participation in key small business events within California, or relevant industry conferences. Candidates with familiarity of the Oakland area and authentic connections to the local business community are highly encouraged to apply.
