Context: The Office of Chapter Support is charged with strengthening the capacity of chapters and groups to build a broader movement, foster a more equitable, just and inclusive organization, and achieve conservation victories. This position plays a key role in achieving these outcomes through the management of programmatic staff, the ongoing assessment of our chapters’ health, along with development and strategic oversight of a sustainable model for providing chapter leaders with the skills and confidence to collaborate powerfully together. The Director of Chapter Support will also play a role providing leadership and guidance across organizational units to ensure that departmental and campaign strategies, including communications, strengthen mutually beneficial chapter-national relationships.

Scope: Reporting to the Program Training Director, the Chapter Support Director will be a senior manager for chapter-related matters.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Establishes clear expectations for communication, coordination, and alignment between the National Sierra Club’s units and local entities so that chapters can be leveraged to sustain and expand the organizations movement building infrastructure.
  • Guides and coaches national staff to develop plans, objectives and communications with chapters in mind.
  • Responsible for identifying structural, cultural and resource barriers to chapter success; convenes appropriate stakeholders to define problems and identify solutions.
  • Assesses chapter health, strengths and weaknesses. Prepares and evaluates recommendations for Sierra Club leadership on chapter needs.
  • Raises the visibility and needs of chapters with senior staff and departmental and campaign leads for greater alignment of movement building and equity work across the organization and better integration of chapter support resources.
  • Ensures that chapter policies and procedures are regularly updated to meet the organization’s needs. Provides leadership and direction in interpreting and enforcing Sierra Club policy and procedures for staff and volunteer leaders.
  • Complete managerial duties such as training and development, preparing annual evaluations and performance plans, hiring staff, recommending salary and promotion decisions, managing performance problems, assigning responsibilities, and restructuring work responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 7+ years prior experience and demonstrated ability managing a corporate or organizational training and development program and services.
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability in the area of grassroots organizing and leadership development.
  • Understanding and demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, justice and inclusion principles both personally and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, manage and lead teams.
  • Understanding and demonstrated competence working in a matrix management context.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  •  Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff and volunteers.

This is a category 3 exempt position.
