This new and important role will support the Associate Director in implementing a comprehensive Outings marketing strategy, including social media, web content and development, online advertising, analytics and tracking, and other strategies to build the Outings brand promote trips, and inspire and engage a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

Scope: The Marketing Associate will be responsible for a variety of projects to help the Outings program realize its ambitious new marketing strategy. They will support the Associate Director with existing projects and take ownership of new ones. This will include expanding our social media presence, helping develop and managing an online trip review system, coordinating with online advertising staff to develop ads, tracking the progress of our online marketing efforts, and general office support. They will also support the Brochure Editor and Outdoor Activity Webmaster with seasonal brochure production and collaborate with Outings and other department staff as need be.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Social media: Develops and repurposes Outings content for regular social media posts designed to build awareness of the Sierra Club Outings brand and announce new trips through Sierra Club social channels including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Collaborates with Associate Director and social media team on strategy and best practices and tracks posts to analyze their impact. Possibly builds and manages Outings group page to build community, interaction, and brand loyalty among Outings participants.
  • Trip review system: Helps develop our forthcoming online trip review system to provide prospective participants with user-generated trip feedback. Promotes and encourages reviews from recent trip participants; reads, approves, and responds to incoming reviews; and works with the Associate Director and web team to evaluate and improve the review system on an ongoing basis.
  • Online advertising: Coordinates with Online Advertising team to develop and monitor online ad campaigns that increase awareness of our brand, promote our trips, and build the Explorer subscriber list. Collaborates with Online Advertising team on Outings images, messaging, and landing pages, reviews draft ads, and collects data on our efforts.
  • Analytics and tracking: Collects and reviews online marketing data including the Explorer newsletter, social media, and advertising to track our impact and inform future efforts. Compiles data from Google Analytics and TRAIL database for easy reference and analysis.
  • General office support: Serves as backup phone reservationist according to weekly schedule and assists with other customer support/reservation tasks, helps build out our new intranet (Campfire), and other office projects as needed.
  • Brochure production (seasonal): Supports the Outings Brochure Editor and Outdoor Activity Webmaster during our annual trip production season in developing high-quality brochures that meet Outings style guide requirements and effectively sell trips.
  • Additional roles and responsibilities: Assists the Associate Director with various projects as needed, including developing engaging online content; collaborating with Digital Strategies team members to improve Outings website design, functionality, and user experience and develop new site features; documenting web processes for staff reference; and designing bimonthly trip announcements in Sierra magazine to coincide with trip launch schedule.
  • Equity, inclusion, and justice: Works on initiatives to further the Sierra Club’s equity, inclusion, and justice goals and increase diversity of Outings leaders and participants, including cultural competency guide, Young Leaders and Participants Committee, and other opportunities to create a more inclusive environment for all.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-2 years of related experience in marketing, digital media, and communications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate with staff, volunteers, and outside vendors.
  • Well-developed professional judgment and decision-making capability and ability to balance multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with G Suite, Word, Excel, and content-management software, and familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Familiarity with Google Analytics a big plus.
  • Essential graphic design skills; ability to produce a variety of materials for publicity and marketing purposes, including ads and share graphics, and basic photo editing.
  • Demonstrated aptitude with numbers, multi-step instructions, and attention to detail.
  • Customer service experience; ability to deal with the general public and maintain composure.
