Communications Manager, Ready for 100 Campaign

Context: Plans and implements comprehensive communications strategies for the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 campaign and supervises media staff in Oakland, CA. Represents the Sierra Club to the media.   

Scope: The Communications Manager, Ready for 100 works closely with the Campaign Director, Deputy Communications Director, Regional Press Secretaries and other capacities to plan and implement comprehensive communications strategy (traditional media outreach and emerging media). Cultivates national media representatives and coordinates work with other environmental or public interest groups as appropriate. Pitches Sierra Club stories, statements, events and reactions to the press. Conducts media trainings for field, chapter staff and volunteer activists.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Designs campaign communications strategy and develops a compelling values-based campaign narrative. Manages day-to-day implementation of communications strategy and tactics.  Coordinates communications strategies with partnering organizations.
  • Works with volunteers and regional staff to identify communications opportunities, produce and amplify compelling stories and storylines in print, broadcast and digital media.
  • Oversees the development of a communications and media training program for campaign staff, volunteers and partners. Provides technical guidance, instruction, coaching and assistance in establishing communications priorities with Ready for 100 field teams. 
  • Collaborates with Deputy Communications Director, Media Coordinator, and Regional Press Secretaries on carrying out timely and coordinated Club response to breaking clean energy news events.
  • Supervises, supports, develops, and provides general guidance to staff.  Includes the following supervisory responsibilities:
    • assigns work and establishes standards and work priorities;
    • ensures staff training and development of employee skills;
    • provides ongoing performance feedback, prepares and conducts formal performance planning and evaluation;
    • recommends salary, hiring, and promotion decisions.
  • Develops and cultivates national and local media relationships. Coordinates contact between the media and appropriate Club staff or volunteer leaders.
  • Works with Online Organizers, the Social Media team, Communications staff and Sierra Club Productions staff to plan and implement digital, e-mail, social media and multi-media tactics.
  • Builds communications partnerships with other organizations to strengthen the national clean energy narrative and promote campaign priorities as part of a larger movement.   
  • Assures preparation of timely and effective communications materials and campaign collateral, working with writer/editor and campaign staff.  
  • Develops materials, including campaign branding, blogs, social media posts, news releases, statements, letters to the editor, op-eds and other materials as required for field work and national media on selected campaigns and legislative issues.  
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Political Science or related field or combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 years of experience in media relations and proven track record of implementing narrative and media strategies, with some background in grassroots organizing.
  • Management experience or ability to demonstrate supervisory skills.
  • Able to recognize ways that racial and social justice intersect with environmental work. Experienced or trained on equity and movement building.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience working in the current media landscape, awareness of traditional and emergent media platforms and technologies, ability to build media relations with journalists, and understanding of how to get stories placed (earned media).
  • Skill with developing user-generated content and identifying compelling stories.
  • Ability to work well with volunteers.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, juggle competing demands, balance high level strategy and task execution, and maintain good working relations with staff and media.  Able to work effectively as a team player.
  • Working knowledge of environmental issues, energy policy and and city and state administrative processes.
  • Digital communications, storytelling and multi-media experience a plus.
